Resolution!
« on: January 27, 2004, 02:02:16 am »
I have a mame cab that I built about 3 years ago and I have always used mame32 (no laughing please!) I have been playing mamewah on my desktop for a few weeks now and really like what it can do. I am now moving it to the cab. I am having some resolution problems with mame and z26. My monitor is a WG that displays a maximum of 640x480. I can force mamewah to only use this res but how do I force mame and z26 to? Some mame games come up fine while others come up in the wrong res. I need them all to come up in a maximum of 640x480.

I am having similiar troubles with z26. Works great on the desktop but when used on the cab it comes up in too high of resolution. can it be forced to always use 640x480 as well?

Thanks
Todd

Are you using an ArcadeVGA?  If so, try my Resolution Tool (from my downloads page).  This will sort out your MAME resolutions.

Sorry, I can't help with Z26, have a read through the docs to see if you can change resolution...

I have a regular VGA card. (TNT2) the monitor supports VGA, but the maximum res is 640x480.

You can probably still use my Res. Tool, if you know the available resolutions for your card.  You'd have to add them manually to ArcadeVGA.txt, and get rid of any non-available resolutions...

Isn't there some way to have mame always select the best resolution and just not go above 640x480? When I used to use mame 32 I never had to change all the resolutions except for the vector games, which required "switch resolution to fit".

thanks

Not that I know of.  MAME's 'auto' resolution setting will pick (what MAME thinks is) the best resolution available from your video card's available modes.  MAME32 works this way too tho...

You could easily set MAME to run at 640x480 all the time, but presumably you want to run lower res' as well.  You can use game or driver specific INI files to force resolutions, but it takes time.  This is what my prog does more or less automatically.

I tried some other resolutions ("native" if you will) and do not feel that the differnce is worth all of the set up hassle. Thank you for your help though!
I am still not sure how to force z26 to always display at 640x480. There is no documentation with it. I wil download the unmodified build to see if it has any.

thanks
