Taking a TV out of its case
« on: January 24, 2004, 06:24:22 pm »
I just took the back off my TV.  I want to make a frame for it and mount it in my cab that way (With the case and speakers off I can make it three to four inches shorter).  Is there anything I should watch out for as far as screwing up the TV?

Also, regarding electrical shock concerns I've taken some pictures and I'm hoping someone can tell me what parts I should avoid touching.

Thanks.

Avoid touching that large orange'ish wire with the sucker cup--big no-no!  Avoid putting any pressure whatsoever onto the yoke area (the part that juts out of the tube with a circuit board attached) and just don't touch the bare circuit board (although not plugged in its probably safe but those caps can hold residual charges).

If you handle it gently you should have no troubles, and if you do unplug something for whatever reason take some really good digital photos first for reference, you can always delete them later when you're done.
its better to not post and be thought a fool, then to whip out your keyboard and remove all doubt...

How long does the TV have to be unplugged before it's basically safe to touch anything?

If I just touch the black wire of a multimeter to the frame or something and then touch various places with the red wire should I be able to tell whether anything is hot?

I don't get why they don't run that orange wire through some kind of conduit if it's so bleeding dangerous.  That's just me, though.

Thanks for the help so far.

Dude, www.arcadecontrols.com can explain it better than me, has everything you need to know about the tv on there.

i just put this zenith from 1992 in my cab... i olny had to unplugthe yoke and degaus coil from the tube.. along with the anode wire..2nd anode that is...  once the tv is off that wire isnt gonna harm ya.. just dont slide your finger under the cap... but it is a good idea to seperate the chassis from the tube when installing.. that way crap isnt messed up or knocked off.. i did knock the convergence tabs good but i pushed em where i thought they were and it looks fine.. huh.. luck? but the only real shock id worry about is if its plugged in and on and your messin on there... but once its unplugged your cool.. only a suprising zap if your not carefull.. nothing thats gonna kill ya unless you have a pcaemaker or sometin' ;)

First question--maybe never, maybe 10 minutes--it depends on the tube and chassis--I've had some that held no charge whatsoever (sanyo tv) and some that held some whopper sparks (wells gardner 4900)  Best bet is to err on the side of caution.

Second Question--probably not a good idea--if you touch part of your meter to an area thats holding a charge it could toast your meter.  If you grab the tv by the tube's edge you'll do fine--I would still recommend separating the chassis from the tube for installation reasons--this also discharges it at the same time so you're golden after that (see the FAQ for instructions if you're unsure how to discharge)

I don't think I ever would have found arcadecontrols.com had I not seen this post.
