Nintendo Classics
« on: February 04, 2017, 10:57:17 am »
It's been several years since my last build. 2 of which I have not posted any details on as they were not cabs for me. This time around I'm, building a cab that is for me and to cater to my youth. As I was growing up in the early years of the arcade some of my memories harken back to the classic Nintendo games. Over the years I have always wanted Nintendo to do an Arcade classics game similar to the Namco Musem on the original Playstation, but knowing that this will never happen I've decided to build my own time machine.

This cab design obviously takes it's shape from the Donkey Kong/Mario Bros style. It's the widebody Nintendo cab with dual speakers. I will also be adding a dual monitor setup without being the extra tall version of the cab now that monitors take up considerably less space these days. Right now I'm working on both the programming of the computer and laying out the art for the cab. I want to make custom menus for the systems that will be included.

Systems that will run on this cab:
1. Nintendo Classics (games like Punch-Out, Mario Bros, DK, DKII, DK Jr., even some of the older titles like Sherif and Sky Skipper).
2. Vs. System (Duck Hunt, Hogan's Alley, Super Mario Bros, Dr. Mario and the like)
3. Player's Choice (yeah might be silly, but I'm going to do it as I spent many quarters on those games)
4. NES (I don't need to explain this at all)
5. Gameboy and Gameboy Color

As of right now this is all that I have to show.

Nice concept. I commend you for not trying to cram in every system Nintendo's ever made, but rather stopping at the ones that make the most sense with arcade controls.

Instead of two monitors, why not use a widescreen TV, but turn it vertically? I think you'd have more success doing your split screen two monitor games that way.

Actually, I thought of that idea last night. The problem that I'm running into (which in the long run I guess is not really a problem but will be an annoyance to me) is when playing a game without the dual screen the position of the game being in the middle of the screen rather than at the bottom. I might play around with it a bit since I have a few widescreen monitors laying around as well.

I don't know, I would think that the screen position bring Dynamic like that would be a positive. You'd probably want the single games to be centered, while the dual-screen ones would take up more space, no? But yes, that's a good idea to test it out before you do anything else. Good luck, again, I like the concept.

I've been playing around with it for a bit now and I am liking it. But not sure if it will work the way I want it to. I think the bezel may get in the way of the screen. I may have to build the cab and then just test the viewing out with both methods. It may be hard to explain but with 2 monitors I can have one at the optimal viewing angle and the top screen at a different angle so that it fits in the cab better. On the flipside, a widescreen will be easier to mount and mask off, and in the long run may cost me less as I can get inexpensive widescreen TVs up to 32" for about $100.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Putting the Nintendo on the side until I do a control panel for a good friend of mine. He wanted a Street Fighter II bartop, but I convinced him to let me make him a Raspberry Pi control panel instead.

I went to go buy the wood today to get started and the saw at lowes is broken. I can't fit a whole sheet in my car so I'll have to wait for my next free day to start working on this. I'll probably just mess around with the Pi today instead.

I know the feeling. The reason I make so many bartops is because I can easily fit the little 2x2 or 2x4 sheets of MDF in my corolla.

Yup, got the wood cut yesterday and I was able to get 2 of these out of a sheet + lots of extra wood left over. I'm was thinking that maybe I could give one away or sell it later on.

I'd go with two 4:3's and call it a day.  Have you checked out ArrowDirect.com?  Usually the code "ARROW" will get you a further discount and free shipping.  They have tons of used 4:3 monitors.
