MAME backdrop or lay file question
« on: January 09, 2017, 02:33:22 pm »
Good morning everyone! My education on all things MAME continues...

The problem I'm having is in regards to backdrops and I'll give a very specific example.

I wish to display the backdrop in Asteroids Deluxe and only the backdrop!

1) If enable "no bezels" in mame.ini then I lose the side art in Gorf, the torpedo indicators in Seawolf and the control panel in Lunar Lander.

2) Furthermore if I use the "no bezels" command and use the asteroidsdeluxe art pack from Mr.Do the bezel will not be displayed but the screen size will be diminished. It just doesn't display the bezel but leaves the "viewing window" the same.

3) If I use "crop artwork" that actually works decent but I lose the top and bottom control info in lunar lander and seawolf.

The ideal fix is to modify the art pack for asteroids deluxe with just the background present and alter the lay file to reflect that but I have had zero luck doing so. I either end up with lines on the screen or nothing displayed.

Anyone else run into this? The wiki on lay files if very thin. Been spinning my wheels for hours now.

Gary

I use an older version of mame, so this may not apply anymore.  While the game is running I hit "tab" to bring up the menu and go to video options.  That allows me to turn on artwork and make changes to other settings such as bezel and background.  I make the changes I need in just that one game.  Its funny - I was fooling around with Asteroids Deluxe just last night.  I enabled the background and ended up changing it back as it was way too distracting for me :)

lol - yeah - this hobby has lots of those SOB moments.  All the information is out there on the web, but finding what you need when you need it can be a pain.  Glad I could help. :)

I tried searching the MAME main site, forums for lay editors, etc and the only thing I could find was a very basic lay file generator for bezels and not much else. Tried manually editing the lay file but that turned into one dead end after another...

Thank you again!
