Easy (?) 5 bucks to be made (not spam)
« on: December 01, 2016, 10:25:44 pm »
Ok here's the deal.  I have been working all night on figuring out how to compile mame .151 with the high score and no nag patch, using headkaze's compiler.  I am at my wits end, and i'm not finding the ways to compile older versions.  Since it SEEMS so much easier for some, i'll PayPal you $5 bucks to do it for me, and simply get me the .exe file.

If this is not enough, let me know what's fair.  I'm tired.   :banghead:

Thanks for the consideration.

EDIT - a few details to mention:  i'm looking to do .151 (not the newest version) because that is the version of all my roms, and my computer is quite a bit older, so based on other things i've read, i'm staying with an older version.

Also, some basic specs for the computer is:
Pentium D 2.8ghz 32 bit
3.11 GB RAM

Thanks again.

I won't have an at home isp until next week, so I can't compile one for you. However, have you considered downloading a compiled version of groovymame 0.151? It should have hi score and nonag built in.

I had or have 151 compiled with high score and no-nag. I can check if I still have a copy in about 12 hours. Skip the payment.

It's a zip file.  Double click it.  Inside are three executables.  See which one runs best on your system.

I did that. I chose the one labeled 32, as I'm on a 32 bit system. But I was labeled as a zip file, not an executable.

INLINE-EDIT OH JEEZ. I downloaded correctly, transferred the wrong file to my machine.

Good thing you didn't take the $5, otherwise you'd be on the hook for lifetime customer service.

I know that I'm being a pest about it.  Believe it or not, I have a degree in IT, but zero capabilities in programming. So I completely understand the, "help them once, help them forever," trap. It made me wince when the .exe file didn't just work.

Thank you for any help you or anyone else may be willing to give.

Make a folder called MAME.  Double click the zip file I sent you.  Drag and drop the files inside into your folder.

Im not at my machine right now, but I did do that, and it crashed both times. Once via double click, once with the command line. I then renamed the file "mame.exe", put it in in place of my current working exe (while moving that to a safe place), and it did not work there, either.  I will mess with it some more when I get home.

I didn't bother with the files labelled"64", as my system is 32 bit.

Well here's what seems to be the final report:

I got it working, using the files that JDFan linked me to (in a PM). It was excellent.  There were no nag/error screens whatsoever.  There was also no High scores saved with that mame file, but i could get over that, if necessary.  For some reason, even the most basic games were running less than 100%.  For now, i've put everything back to where it was.  If the extra scripts put a bigger load on the system, i may have to consider a better system down the road.  (Admittedly, this one WAS nearly free, and is only a single core processor.)  I will definitely be coming back to this at a later date.

Thank you again, pbj, JDFan, and anyone else that i can't look back on while posting this.  I appreciate your time and efforts working with me.

EDIT - Also, the title of this now seems ironically stupid.  :lol

I have .154 running with nonag and hiscore saves working. Your .151 ROMs may work with that. PM me if you want the files.

is HLSL enabled?
Not sure when the options changed, but I use v.146 and reducing the prescale on the HLSL options makes a big difference.

What MOBO socket is the system and what CPU support does the Bios have ?? - figure most pentiumD's also support core2duo CPUs and you can get a cheap Core2Duo CPU for less than $10 that would probably help things quite a bit ! (ebay has several e8400 CPUs ( dual core 3.0Ghz.) for less than $5 shipped !)

Noob question: if I pick up a 3 GHz processor, and it's 64 bit, do I need to run a different copy of Windows? Or does Windows XP make that adjustment automatically? I've replaced processors before, but never crossed that threshold on an established system.

EDIT: a simple Google answered that:
Can I run Windows 2000 and Windows XP on a64-bit CPU, and use old software? Yes, a 32-bitOS (Windows 2000 or XP) will run on a 64-bit processor. You should also be able to run older 32-bit software on a 64-bit OS.

Yes, the board will support one of those exact processors.  This will be an addition in the near future.  Thanks!

Glad to hear it supports it - for the $5 it should help get a fairly decent boost in performance and should be just a simple CPU swap.
