Polo 28" hot resistor?
« on: November 11, 2016, 08:59:16 am »
Hello everyone,

I've got a 28" Polo in my *very* unfinished Mame cabinet - it's not had much use of the last few years but I fire it up every now and then and it works great.  However, I was scanning the chassis recently and noticed how the PCB under one of those white square resistors looks discoloured due to heat (see attachment)

So my noob question is - is that normal, or indicative of some impending issue?

Also, I've noticed it has the original flyback with the light grey front - I think I've read somewhere that these were prone to early failure?  Anyone know where I could get a spare for the cupboard, either in the UK or with international shipping?

Cheers!

Simon.

it's fairly typical of these old phenolic boards. it's less noticeable in newer fiberglass boards. they get pretty dark when they get heated. that resistor is dissipating probably 8 to 10 watts of power while it's running.

It's normal on Polos that the high wattage resistors (including the PTC) blacken the board underneath due to heat:

Brilliant - thanks very much for the quick replies!   The monitor is my favourite part of the machine - I know they can do all sorts of things with shaders and filters these days, but there's something about that convex glass blob that has a special place in my heart!

Thanks again!
