Mortal Kombat Cabinet to MAME Cabinet
« on: October 18, 2016, 06:37:24 am »
Anyone on here have a link to plans for a Mortal Kombat cabinet converted to a MAME cabinet? I want to keep it as a MK cabinet, but need modified plans that add the pull out keyboard area underneath the control panel. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

The keyboard tray really shouldn't be necessary once you have it set up. It's way more work to try and do that to the mk cp that worth it anyways. If you really want a keyboard you could stash it in the coin door.

^ what he said.

I have not touched my kb in months (since I finished updating my cab) and if I do need it I just pull it through the coin door.

If you really want a keyboard, build your own machine. Don't hack up an original machine to put something in as worthless as a keyboard.
If you can read this, it means Photobucket's money grab ruined my signature photos.

Or get a wireless keyboard that you could just throw on top of the cab or stash in a drawer elsewhere.

yeah keyboard tray is so 2005 :)

Unless you plan on sitting in front of the thing for countless hours doing config, then maybe.

Most people config on a seperate setup and then use the bluetooth keyboard for minor maint.  The keyboard tray idea becomes an eye sore over time if its not done right.

And don't you dare hack up a MK cabinet to put one on it.... :whap

Google jakobud cabinet plans, and you'll have what you need.

Ha! Thanks, all! Once said, it seemed very obvious that you're all right. I am new to this, and I guess I expected that it was needed. I do have a wireless keyboard that can be stashed in the cabinet.
I have almost all of the main pieces cut out, and then I'll move on to all the small board (stabilizer?) pieces. After that, I'm not sure what I need to do to assemble it. I have the Build Your Own Arcade book, but I'm not using the cabinet plans that the author outlines in the book. I would love to have a list of all the minor pieces needed to build this beauty.

To run the cabinet I have a Raspberry Pi 3, but have ordered a gaming computer with a Hyperspin front end to handle all the MAME requirements, etc. I'm not sure what to do about the monitor yet. I love the way my Mortal Kombat 2 monitor looks for that game, but I don't know how it will look with the new generation MK 9 and 10, as well as other newer games. There are a couple of stand up arcade games that I will eventually buy, but in the meantime I will go with the MAME build. (List of games I'd love to own, alongside of my MK 2 would be Street Fighter 2 Championship Edition, MK, MK 3, and Karate Champ. And if the stars align, I'd love a full environment cabinet Deadly Discs of Tron)

Everyone seems very knowledgeable on this site, and it's a little daunting asking questions. I appreciate the hand holding guidance and will gladly repay my debt in the future. If I can be of assistance to anyone, please just ask.

Um, I guess I wasn't clear about this. I would never destroy one of my personal childhood dreams to do something silly like add a computer tray to it. If I were to do such at thing, I'd deserve the rocks thrown at me.

Mortal Kombat II is a thing of beauty and outside of the day I married my wife, or the days my two daughters were born, I have no prouder moment than the day I brought that beautiful piece of fully functional modern art into my house! Now if I can just distract the wife while I bring in the other arcade games I want...
Yes, I have small dreams, what can I say :)

I'll post a couple pics from last weekend while my friends and I were beginning the building process for a new Mortal Kombat 9 cabinet. I suck at this sort of thing, but my friends are actual useful members of society, thankfully.
