Tandy CM-5 RGB Monitor usable for arcade game?
« on: October 12, 2016, 01:51:35 pm »
Hi all, I have an Arkanoid cocktail which had a broken Toei monitor.  Attempted to fix it, but that thing is beyond my scope of knowledge since the parts are rare I am told.  I replaced it with a temporary 13" LCD I had lying around with an RGB converter.  It works great, but I'd like to swap in a tube monitor eventually.

I'm no monitor expert by any means, but I saw a Tandy CM-5 RGB monitor on my local CL for cheap.  It's about the same size as the one that's in there.  My question is:  Can I easily attach all of the wires and make it work with my PCB?  I'm thinking it's possible, but haven't tried yet.  It's listed as a CGA monitor at 60Hz.

Here's the pinout I found online:

I checked the Arkanoid manual and found the following:

Think it will work?

Arkanoid outputs composite NEGATIVE sync signal. The Radio Shack monitors are designed for seperate POSITIVE sync signal.

I know for sure the Radio Shack CM-11 is positive sync and your CM-5 is also likely positive sync. We used to use the CM-11 on Medalist "DartStar" coin op dart boards because those boards generated positive sync.

Perhaps your RGB converter board has selectable sync output so you could use the Radio Shack monitor?

Shipping something from the U.S. to Canada for repair/exchange?  Please use USPS to avoid (additional?/excessive?) shipping charges.  PM me if you have any questions.

Here's my guide on the Radio Shack CM-11 monitor if you happen to run across one:

https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=sites&srcid=ZGVmYXVsdGRvbWFpbnxtdHBhY2lmaWNvfGd4OjJkNWFiYTFiMjkwNGE1NmI

They were fairly easy to repair from what I recall.

If anyone needs any other of my repair guides they are now here:

A CM-11 could probably be used perfectly fine with games that generate positive sync like Centipede, Defender, etc.
