Geforce2 MX work on Hantarex 9000?
« on: January 20, 2004, 08:55:41 am »
Hello everyone.

I have a Creative Geforce2 MX PCI graphics card in the Pentium3 450mhz computer with 512mb SDRAM. I'm going to be putting this into my jamma cab via a JPAC, however since the monitor inside my cab is a Hantarex 9000 arcade monitor, i'm just wondering if this graphics card would be compatible.

I would buy the ArcadeVGA however i'm a mere student, and funds are low to say the least  >:(

Any help on this would be fantastic!

Best regards to all, Andy

You're going to need special drivers and/or software to get your card to output the 15kHz horizontal refresh rate needed for your arcade monitor. You could try Powerstrip under Windows (there was a post about it not long ago). The easiest way (if you know DOS) is to do it under DOS, ArcadeOS is very easy to setup for arcademonitor use, and that'll allow you to play Mame on an arcade monitor.

The GeForce2 MX works fine with 15KHz in windows. With powerstrip I could run the desktop and directX games in both 640x480i & 768x576i. Could not get it to work with non-interlaced modes since windows forces double-scan as soon as you try a mode with less than 400 lines.

In DOS the problem is the opposit! SVGA lib (which advancemame uses) doesn't support interlace on nvidia chips.

(But for DOS & advancemame the GeForce is an overkill anyway. Any old VGA card which is on the SVGALIB support list is fine. I use a Sis6326 from 1998!)

I've been looking for a Sis card for ages so i just (1 min ago ;-) ) purchesed a SiS 6326 Chipset AGP 8MB card from ebay for 8 quid. So should this be better at running my Arcade Monitor? or the Geforce2MX? Anything special i need to know?

Cos i'm getting a Jpac.... do i just stick it all together and turn the PC and the arcade machine on - and that'll work i presume? What would i see? Would DOS/Windows work with the Sis card?

Sorry for all the questions all, but your all so very helpful!  ;D

Best wishes to all

Andy

Sis isn't fully suported by powerstrip so you can't run windows on your monitor unless you find some other tool.

Advancemame works fine. The only problem I have seen is that the card got some problems with low resolutions so you sometimes need to double the resolution.

If you want plug-and-play, go for the arcadeVGA card. It is well worth the money.

Any other card requires a lot of experimenting and monitor switching (arcade monitor <-> VGA monitor)

The general process is:
1. Try to get a text mode working on the arcade monitor with the advv tool.
2. Use the text mode to have the dos screen and advv running on the arcade monitor so you don't need the vga monitor anymore.
3. Adjust your monitor to the highest vertical resolution you want to run (e.g. 640x480 or 768x576)
4. Create modelines for all the resolutions you want to use. (You can let advmame generate them for you but then they will not have the correct aspect ratio since advancemame doesn't know how your monitor is adjusted)
