Games with 224px vertical resolution
« on: September 17, 2016, 12:08:32 pm »
Hi everyone.

Just made a HUGE jump from XP to 7 using the latest GM.

Now I'm using super resolutions and was wondering if it was worth it to add a super resolution for 224px game since there are a lot (IIRC all CPS1 and CPS2 games and Neo Geo).
Actually I was wondering what happens when a Nx224 game is run at 2560x240. Does it add black bars?

Thanks.
On a scale of fakeness, from more genuine to more fake, we'd have:

1.- Plastic plants (cf. Fake Plastic Trees)
2.- Inflatable dolls
3.- Arcade cabinets with LCD monitors

It should add extra bar either to the top or bottom part of the screen.

It depends on the TV as well. For example, on my two PAL Sony CRTs, I get perfectly stretched 224p from botom to top. No black borders at all.

Personally, i found that there were way more games that used 224 lines than 240 so set my geometry to that. It cuts of 16 lines for that 240 games but they're definitely in the minority.

In theory TV overscan should be set exactly for 224 visible lines using 60 Hz mode. The rest should be overscan.

Uhm, just to test this out, does anyone know the modeline to put into the users - super.ini file for x224 resolution?

EDIT – Just found out this old post by Calamity:

Regarding 224p vs 240p, this topic has been covered hundreds of times. What you really need to get is that at 60Hz/15.7kHz, both 224p & 240p are 262 lines tall including blanking. This means they're actually the *same* mode from the monitor's point of view. In other words: 224p = 240p + borders. It doesn't matter if it's MAME who adds the borders by software or you who calculate the modeline with borders (extra blank lines added to vertical front and back porch).

So we should be fine with 240p and should not bother with an additional 224p modeline.

In 224p neogeo games like Metal Slug, we all get black borders, so your setup is fine.
