First build, Nintendo look alike
« on: September 12, 2016, 08:38:06 am »
I have been trying to replicate the build I saw here http://m.imgur.com/a/ajacB. Having never built an cabinet before I was looking for something modern and simple. I started work on this project this past weekend but have more than a few questions floating around in my mind. First off, I noticed the speakers were mounted on the above and below the TV. Does anyone have any idea how the sound makes it through the plexiglass or if holes were made for the sound to pass through?  Also what in general do people do to mount the plexiglass in place on most cabs?

Off to a nice start!  :applaud:
Hard to see what was done with the speakers. If the plexi goes all the way down, I'd say he probably did nothing.
You could have a 4" portion at the bottom with speaker cloth, which would match the plexi. You could probably find some other locations as well.

For the plexi mounting: some wooden strips on the sides to rest it against, glue magnets on the back to be able to remove it easily, or cut a slot that it fits in. All based on the need for removal later without tearing the cabinet apart.

Little bit more work this afternoon.

Ideas on how thick the plexiglass should be that covers the TV? Or where to get some.

1/8 inch is fine, home depot or lowes.

or source some smoked plexi on the web which will diffuse the brightness of your tx

1/8 would be to thin over such a large area. I'd say 5mm minimum
Or two pieces if 1/8 with besel artwork sandwich inbetween

So before I can get the control panel started I guess I should pick some joysticks and buttons. I know there are a lot of options on what people would prefer and I'm hoping I just need some help to make my own decision. First off I was thinking Id like a stick that I can switch between 4/8 way like the mag stick. But many have said the throw is too short and I think I would prefer a longer throw. I was thinking of pulling the trigger on either the servo stick or omni2. Then I ran across a comment in some forum of someone saying 'why do you need to have 2 of them?' so that got me thinking, do you really just need one switchable 4/8 way and just another 8 way on a 2 player machine? And if you do, then what stick do you buy so the feeling is the same in either players joystick? I'd like to place an order sooner than later to get things moving. I'm guessing 2 sticks. 6 buttons per player and a start and coin for each player. I think all other functions can use shift feature of ipac I plan on using.

Did a bit of priming today

So still trying got figure out how / where to mount the speakers. I'm thinking in the upper corners. That's about 3 1/2" from the bottom of the marquee. That said in the original picture it just has a piece of plexiglass over the whole thing. Doesn't that muffle the sound? Is it possible to put a a speaker grill cover in the plexiglass or something? I guess I could do a speaker cloth but just wondering how that would look. I kind of liked the simple look of just the plexi and it painted to black out the edges.

plenty of options man.

On the top firing up
in the CP firing down
below the CP firing forward

They won't fit in the marquee facing down?

I'm sure they would. Just not sure if being placed behind the plexiglass inhibits the sound - instead of putting it facing the user

For what its worth, these are the PC speakers I bought.

Logitech Speaker System Z313 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002HWRZ2K/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_FCf6xbRGCZX4J

They are not mountable out of the box. So I have to come up with something

The plastic would definitely muffle the sound somewhat but if you like the look then just put them up there and try it with your plexi in place. If it is okay then you never had a problem.  If it is horrible it is time to go to plan B, whatever that is. Behind the plexi may not be worse than into the floor, into the ceiling, or into your knee which are the other viable options suggested. I agree that speaker cloth on the front of that design would not look best.

It did. Kinko's didn't want to print it because of the Nintendo logo.

All wired up. Picked up the golf leaf buttons. Not sure if I'm liking them all that much. I kind of like the click of the other black ones on the CP

Forget the clicking and think about how much faster you can shoot bullets.

So tried to get the control panel in the frame, and I'm not liking the gap between the plexiglass and the wood. Probably why people use t molding. Can't with this design. Also didn't help that the glass shop I got the plexiglass from didn't make that straight of a cut. I probably could have done better. Or maybe should have routed it flush but didn't have a bit. Anyway is there anything I can put in the gap to seal finish the edges? Caulk? I'm going to leave the bottom of the CP open for switching the 4/8 way sticks

I think for the marquee, in just going to cut the stuff from home depot myself. I heard plexi was stronger for the cp and I thought a glass shop could do ot better than I could. Bit I guess they figured there was some fudge room.

It's not so bad when I really push the panel in. I did some sanding to help with it as well.

Added SMD (led light) under the trackball. Hooked it up to one of the molex power supplies so turns on with the PC.

Look this build isn't exactly my cup of tea, but I really like that you have a consistent theme and didn't go overboard with too many buttons or LED's.

Good job so far!

Will those battens behind the marquee be visible ? If yes, you might add two battens in the bottom corners, so that it looks like an intentional pattern.

Did I miss something?

How does this cab not fall over on you while playing it? Is it strapped to the wall? did you put cinder blocks inside?

I want to print a better marquee as well. It was cheap paper and not permanently in place. Will probably make it black to hide the wood. As far as it tipping over why would it. It is stable. I think you're missing the grey at the bottom. Having never built a cabinet before I'd say it turned out pretty good. If need be I can strap it to the wall or extend some feet but you'd have to lean in it quite a bit to get it to tip over.

You are correct. The angle of you last picture makes the dark grey portion of the base look like a shadow. I thought the only part of the base holding everything up was the light grey portion.  :)
