It's coming along nicely, even though this will be my first woodworking project ever!

Had a bear of a time with that drawer, ended up just using slats of wood to guide it and hold it in place within the cab on each side.

It's all birch, and I'm going to give it a relatively dark stain. I'm going plexiglass over the monitor, and I have some nice Happ super joysticks and it will have 2 sets of six buttons from Happ.

I'll post as it comes along!

Looks nice and solid - interesting choice, though, to go with the 'flat' control panel as opposed to an angled one.

Are you sure about staining it? I tried a lot of stains and varnishes before going with a gloss varnish only over Birch.  Stains didn

Actually although the control panel box is screwed togethter already, I'm stongly considering a healthy angle to it. It's as it is now more for spacing reasons.

And I'm not really sure about the stain. I'm new to this, so I'm not sure what looks best. The only qualification is that it must blend in with various other wood pieces in our home because it will be on display.

I kinda like a flat panel myself.  As long as you are sitting level with the panel, i find that it helps support my wrists better then having an angle on it.   I am 33 years old and sometimes i can feel it in my wrists and joints that i have been playing games since i was YOUNG(er) lol.
Have that support really helps me.  I have some GEL wrist rests sitting on my panel for long playing sessions and i tell you what, i couldn't live with out them!!!  :D

Good luck,

Still pluggin away whenever I can.

Installed the monitor today. It's an old 25" TV that was lying around; cleaned up and good to go. Fits like a glove!

Nice, plywood is always a good choice.

I would personally add a coin door, and lose the handle in front.

I'm strongly considering the coin door if but the price at happs scares me away every time. :)

It's birch, is that considered plywood? What is plywood? I'm new to this stuff.

Plywood is a general term for sheets of wood made from layers (plys) of wood.  Your birch plywood is birch because the outside layer is made from birch.

Went and got a coin door off ebay for $40. Supposed to have working mechs and working lights. Got a lock and key set off ebay as well.

I'm going to swap the two lower panels and put the drawer on bottom I think wit the coin door on the upper panel. Should look nice. Damn all of you for tempting me. :)

well... if you look at the edge of your wood...

if you see layers of wood.... generally that's call plywood...

plywood has a different types...

some has good finishes on 1 side.... (so... 1 side is kinda rough, 1 side is smooth...)
some has good finishes on both sides...
and some cheap ones are rough both sides...

and your is brich... they're suppose to be nice ones...

usually.... 1 layer is like 1/8 or 1/4 inch thick....

and if you look at the edge of the wood... you see like grains.... (like bits and pieces of wood pressed together...)
usually you see this on cheap furnitures...

and for MDF... its kinda like particle board... but its not pressed together by bits and pieces of wood... but by pieces that are fine like dust.....

hope it helps....

Another Brilliant mind ruined by education....  :p

Why is your keyboard draw so deep or are you planning on using it for something else.

Also for the draw pull you can buy in most stores wooden handles of the same style as the one you have. They look better once the cab is stained.

Hey again,

Thanks for all the wood knowledge, I appreciate it. :)

So I got my coin door, attached are pics. Seems to need a bit of cleaning but I ran a few coins through and it seems to work great.

@Gary: Yeah, it is a big deep drawer. Originally I was thinking that it would be nice to put dvds and game controllers and other stuff in there but now that I have the coin door I may eliminate the drawer alltogether and go with a wireless keyboard. I have a nice solid kennsington trackball for my mouse.

Kind of planning as I go.
