Can't get low resolutions with CRT Emudriver 2.0 + 6450
« on: June 23, 2016, 04:24:43 pm »
Hiya!

I am hoping someone pinpoints me what I am doing wrong  :D
Started working on my groovymame setup and currently for ease of use I decided to do the initial emu/roms/frontend setup next to my main pc using a 1084S monitor. The machine is running win7/x64 and has a 2GB 6450 vga.

The driver setup went fine and I have a really nice 640x480 desktop displayed on the 1084. I followed Calamity's guide installing the driver and the modes and I got 15 modes installed, just like the picture he attached in the guide : http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=1052#p1052 , I attach some pics of the VMMAKER settings:

and this is what I get when I try to run SFA3 with the same command-line as the one at the tutorial (using the latest 0.171 GM) :

here is an example of a vertical game - this one runs fine with an interlaced resolution:

so apparently lower resolutions are not available or something, I tried setting other emulators like Magic Engine or KEGA fussion to use the 2560x240 resolution but they quit with errors about the screen mode.
Arcade_OSD on the other hand doesn't seem to have issues displaying the 240p resolution:

I gave a shot with the GENERIC_15 profile, didn't made a difference though.
So what is going on here?  ??? What did I do wrong?
Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

Super resolutions only works with switchres if I remember well. You must add native modelines for the other emulators like Kega or Magic Engine.

For Mame and especially your SF screenshot, it seems GM does not treat it as a super resolution.

Did you follow the last instructions of the tutorial ?
-->The final step is to edit mame.ini and with the options -resolution 2560x0 -cleanstretch 2.

really? I thought that 2560x0 resolutions were globally available, I need to read on how to install the native resolutions you mention...
About GM, yes - mame.ini is edited but it affects nothing in my case...
Plus it shouldn't matter since I launched SFA3 with the command line from the tutorial: "mame64 sfa3 -resolution 2560x0 -cleanstretch 2"  , switchres does say in the info box that it will use the 2560x240p resolution but instead it uses the interlaced one - I think 480i and it seems my setup is stuck to using this  ???

Near the sample ini file you used to add the super resolutions with VM maker, you should find another one which contains the native modelines for consoles. Juste copy paste these modelines at the end of your previous ini file dans launch VM maker again.

Regarding your problem with GM, unfortunatly, I don't have any idea.  :-(

Thanks for the help CitrikElektrik , I will append the console resolutions to the INI and re-do the process :)
Hopefully someone will give a pointer why GM does not work correctly on my setup :)

It's quite strange the Mame's splash screen is displayed properly and not the game itself.

Since you're about to install native modelines for your home systems, I would advise you to also add the native one of the CPS 2 and try to launch Mame from the command line as you did earlier but with the native resolution (384 x 224) and see the result. If it works, it could mean something is wrong with the super resolution.

In the meantime, I will have a look on my cab to see what's the resolution GM use with this game on my setup to check if it's the proper one. Since Switchres pick up the nearest modeline it finds if the proper one is missing, it could be the issue.

Done. The resolution is the same. Same frequencies too. I use the stable version of CRT-emudriver on this box and the GM version should be 0.166 if I remember well. Maybe you met a bug on the 0.171 ?

thanks so much for the help CitrikElektrik , I finally got GM working as expected  ;D

I re-did the MAME setup, with a new clean directory, downloaded stock mame64 0.171 - replace .exe with the GM one and made the resolutions setup again. This time it worked:

I also appended the extra resolutions and created them as well, now I need to spend some time setting up the emulators  :)

yes - GM is working great and as expected... if only the other emulators would comply to the resolutions I want then I'd be set  ;D
