Best sandwiches / sandwich shop thread
« on: May 05, 2016, 08:01:25 pm »
Since the thread we were discussing sandwiches in mysteriously disappeared, I wanted to start a new one. Many of us travel to different cities and are always looking for good places to eat. I threw out Cheba Hut. Anybody else in their hometowns have some good sandwich shops to recommend?

I should be in El Paso Memorial Day weekend, and we're going to San Diego in July. I'd love recommendations from these two towns in particular.

If you're in the Phoenix area, besides Cheba Hut, I would recommend Forefather's Philadelphia Cheesesteaks. People tell me that the closest to the real thing they've had. They also have a pretty good fry sauce for dipping.

I liked Potbelly's when I lived in Dallas. But it's got nothing on Cheba Hut. Beers on tap!

We have Potbelly's here in Phoenix. I do like them. They're definitely on my list.

I love sandwiches.

I wish there were lots of great sandwich places in San Diego, but most are just ok.

My favorite are:

Rubicon Deli - http://rubicondeli.com/it's a small chain with only 4 locations at this point.
Gaglione Brothers - http://www.gaglionebros.com/ for cheese steaks.
Blue Water - http://bluewaterseafoodsandiego.com/ for fish. They will grill up any fish you want and make a sandwich out of it. They also have a killer tuna melt and salmon burger.

Tiger!Tiger! Tavern has my favorite sandwich in town, a giant wood fired Pork Belly Banh Mi. http://tigertigertavern.blogspot.com

My wife really like Brothers Provisions and raves about it, it's further north by her work but I haven't made it up there yet. http://brosprovisions.com/daily-menu

I had a great sandwich in Little Italy last time I was there. We'll be in San Diego for a week,  so I'm hoping to find a few good places.  Thanks for the suggestions.

If you are ever in Chicago, have an Italian shaved beef sandwich at Portillos.

Had the meatball sub as Jersey Mike's and wasn't super impressed.  Guess I should try the cheesesteak?

Primanti Bros.    https://www.primantibros.com/

They have a bunch of locations now, but the original in the Strip District of Pittsburgh is still the best.

Not really a sandwich person, but if you ever find yourself out in the middle of nowhere in Louisiana along I-10, I've yet to find a poboy that comes close to the ones from here:

http://www.boudinshop.com/

I've had the shrimp, oyster, alligator, catfish.....

I give it 4.5 of 5 shakes of a troll's tail.

Haven't been there in awhile but Schlotsky's has a couple locations in El Paso, that used to be pretty good.

ANd of course if you're looking for a good steak - there's Cattlemans Steakhouse just outside of town in Fabens ( bit of a drive but worth it for the 2Lb. aged T-bone steak ) - They also sell some great ground meat that is great for cooking burgers on the grill for the holiday ! ( they take the trimmings from all the steak prep and grind it and freeze for sale - so it's the same aged beef as the steaks and makes great burgers on the grill !!

If your ever in Kathmandu The Lunch Box is great. The owner worked in a Chicago deli for years before moving back to Kathmandu. In short it's an US stile deli with a Nepali twist.

If you are ever in the San Francisco Bay area Ike's Place (several locations) Has some of the best sandwiches I've ever eaten.

http://www.ilikeikesplace.com/

Quote
Ike’s Place first opened its door on Halloween of 2007. The man behind the sandwich, Ike Shehadeh, always puts his customers happiness first. That is what sets Ike’s Place aside from the rest. When you come to Ike’s Place it is our goal to make you feel like the unique individual that you are. If that isn’t enough to set us aside, did I mention that the bread is baked fresh to order? And our soon to be patented “Ike’s Dirty Secret Sauce” is spread on every sandwich and baked right in the bread, and another layer is spread on afterwards to give it that extra flavor. Mmmmm… are you hungry yet?

If you guys find yourself in an area that sells Vietnamese food, check out a Banh Mi sandwich:

From wiki:
Quote
The Vietnamese sandwich, sometimes called a "bánh mì sandwich", is a product of French colonialism in Indochina, combining ingredients from the French (baguettes, pâté, jalapeño, and mayonnaise) with native Vietnamese ingredients, such as cilantro, cucumber, and pickled carrots and daikon.

That looks really good. There's a Vietnamese sandwich place sort of near my work that has excellent stuff.

Good stuff.

But someone needs to teach the Vietnamese how to to chop cilantro like a Mexican. Tastes better and doesn't feel like you are chewing on cobwebs.

Not going to give a shoutout to the place since nobody is going to be travelling around here,
but I had a turkey sandwich last week that had jalapeno coleslaw on it.
The jalapenos were diced super small and mixed into the rough cut slaw just before it was served.
Enough heat to know it was there, but not so much as to overpower everything.
Awesome flavor.

They do if you get it at a real Vietnamese place that doesn't cater to the white man. Real bánh mì's also have Fish-Sauce and Sriracha. That's that dirty-dirty flava!

I had a really great roast beef sandwich from here called The Liberty:

http://www.carnivoresandwich.com

3/4 lb of roast beef, swiss cheese, russian dressing and cole slaw all on a giant onion roll.

Delicious.
