CLOSED: Toshiba tube stopped working
« on: April 11, 2016, 03:42:13 pm »
I've got an old Toshiba 36" tube set that came with the house years ago.  It worked fine last time I fired it up (probably a year ago).  I have my Dreamcast and GameCube hooked up to it primarily because the Dreamcast guns need an old tube to work.  I have a Sony Wega for my main set but it doesn't work with the guns.

Anyway, when I tried to turn it on this weekend, nothing happened.  The power button on the front didn't do anything, so I tried the remote which also did nothing.  I found the second remote and it also failed to turn the set on.  I checked the power and put it straight into the wall (no power strip) for testing.  While I still can't turn it on, when I put the plug in, I hear the tube charge up (that characteristic buzz when you turn a tube set on).  But, I can't turn the TV on after that.  I don't really use the set, but I really like being able to fire up the DC once in a while to play HOTD.

Does anyone have a suggestion?  I was about to just load it up and take it to the dump, but if I can fix it easily that would be great.  If not, I could probably make it available to someone local that might want it.  I opened the back and it is very open to work on.  I didn't see anything that looked obviously wrong (blown caps, burn marks, etc), but I'm not an electrician so I didn't expect to find anything.  I'm not going to spend anything significant on this thing, but if I can fix it I will.

No thoughts on this?  Is there a better forum to ask specific questions about tubes these days?  I used to direct this type of question to the AVS forums but tubes haven't been made in a while, so I figured it was closer to an arcade monitor question.

it could be 1000 different things... about the only thing you've eliminated is the degauss coil is functioning.

the first rule of electronics troubleshooting is:

THOU SHALT CHECK VOLTAGES.

make sure you have power going into the monitor. maybe a bad cord.

make sure power is making it past the fuse. fuses have been known to blow for no reason because they get old and weak from vibrations.

make sure your low voltage power is being produced. your 12 volts your 24 volts, your 5 volts etc.

lots of TV put scematics or a layout of the testpoints of the voltages on the inside of the cabinet. take a look, you might get lucky.

as always HIGH VOLTAGE disclaimer and death and killing and carefullness and whatnot.

Forgot I created this thread.  I asked over at AVS Forums as well and was able to work it out.  The issue was a bad cap on the power supply board.  I didn't have an exact replacement, but was able to test with a very similar cap to verify that was the only issue.  After successfully testing, I ordered the new cap and will install on arrival.  Thanks for following up.
