Want to use 55" or bigger LCD
« on: March 17, 2016, 08:03:34 am »
I have been trying to figure out the ends and outs of using a 55" (or bigger) LCD/LED to run my new pedestal.
But every post seems to quickly get off into the CRT vs LCD discussion that goes no where.  Might as well discuss religion or politics.
I do not want this thread to talk about CRT.  I do not care about CRT and do not want a system that I have to lug around like the EDOT I owned back in the early 2000s.
Please give me your knowledge on using LCD.

This is a pedestal, I want the screen to be big.  I want a LCD and want to know how to do this as best I can.
Please give me input of which LCD TV would work best for lag.  Is there any items I need to buy that will give me a better picture while playing?
Any specific settings I need to work MAME better?  Any specifications I should look for in the LCD?
I do not care if the signal is not 80s arcade perfect.  My family and 100% of the people using this machine have no idea what that is anyway.
I do not want to use a computer monitor, they are too small.  I want 55" or bigger.
Location is USA.

Thanks...

If you aren't concerned with making the LCD look like a CRT, then the MAME setting aren't that complicated. Just buy a big TV and start playing games.

Here's a site that tests TVs for input lag.

There's no discussion on it because it's super simple:

1. Plug in HDMI cable from computer to TV
2. Start MAME
3. Play games!

You'll have more luck on the shoryuken.com forum. I saw a list there somewhere. Those guys are about getting down lag to half a frame because that is huge for fighting games.
When you find great deals on Craigslist for CRT based cabs, exuberance :laugh2: can be a bad thing!

Thanks guys, all of your comments are what I wanted to verify.
I just want to play games, and my audience is not anyone who ever knew arcades ever existed.
But they do know about big widescreen LCD panels on the wall.

If I were to break out a CRT monitor, it would be like taking out an 8-track tape.
Don't get me wrong, I understand what the CRT brings to the table, but the people who will be playing the machine do not.

I do want to try to get a TV with low lag.  But I am not going to shell out a lot of time and money.  Mortal Kombat is about all I will be playing, when it comes to fighting games.
If I ever get into those really cool fighting games, I will re-design.

Thanks again for the comments...

if your LCD has one, enable "game mode" this reduces the lag introduced by TV's processing each frame to improve picture quality. Game mode disables this processing (or greatly reduces it) making the lag between what's coming out of the computer and what is being displayed on the panel.
