Daphne and Space Ace
« on: March 16, 2016, 08:45:23 am »
I have the Space Ace DVD and I'm  trying to tie in Daphne with Hyperspin, but each time i run the game it always asks for the DVD...it works fine with it in the cdrom drive, but I don't want to always have the media in there.  I also have the Dragons Lair media too, so I can't be swapping DVDs each time.

Am i missing something here?

Thanks.

From the Daphne WIKI ( https://www.daphne-emu.com:9443/mediawiki/index.php/DigitalLeisureDVD#Auto-downloadable_Games )

The Scoop

In order to make Daphne as easy to use as possible, we've made a deal with a company that holds the copyrights to several laserdisc games, Digital Leisure. They sell several DVD's that let you play some laserdisc games on a DVD player (or on a PC with a DVD drive).

Digital Leisure has given you permission to auto-download these games using Daphne as long as you prove that you own them by inserting a DVD.
Did Digital Leisure force you to go this route (by legal threats for example) ?

No, they did not approach us or threaten us. We approached them and the reason really is because we wanted to find a way to make Daphne easy to use for newbies, and the only way to make it easy to use was to make it automatically set up everything needed to play its supported games. In other words, the main motivating factor was we were tired of people complaining that Daphne was too hard to use (seriously).
If I buy a Digital Leisure DVD, will this help support the Daphne team? (ie does the Daphne team make money off of sales)

No, the Daphne team does not make any money off DVD sales. The main reason for supporting some Digital Leisure DVD's is to provide a convenient legal way for the end user to play these games. For this reason, there will be no support for new Digital Leisure products.
Do I have to buy a DVD to play these games?

Digital Leisure DVDs are not required to use the latest version of Daphne. If you have captured your own laserdisc or have a real laserdisc and player, you can still use these methods by changing the laserdisc options in the game settings. While these methods are functional and supported by the Daphne software, the auto-download method is strongly recommended because it is, by far, the easiest to get working.
Auto-downloadable Games

The Digital Leisure games that Daphne will automatically download are:

    Dragon's Lair
    Dragon's Lair II: Timewarp
    Space Ace
    Thayer's Quest
