Can you use the Bezel artwork Feature with a 4:3 CRT?
« on: February 27, 2016, 10:43:04 am »
I know this sounds like a weird question.  I have a converted Mortal Kombat Cab with the original 25 inch Arcade monitor. On 4:3 horizontal games Im fine with Native resolution and aspect for playing games. my question is about vertically oriented games like Galaga Kangaroo etc. My screen is large enough that it can have a vertically oriented game play at a nice size, even with wide borders along the edges. What I wanted to find out about doing is doing a full or cropped bezel around the game's playfield on a 4:3 monitor. I just cant find any examples of anyone doing this. Yeah, the game isn't taking advantage  of the much larger monitor, but most of the classics played on 19 inch screens, so its not much of a loss. Anyone with experience or examples of someone doing this? If its a pipe dream or silly let me know that too.  BTW my computer is running hyperspin and Groovymame through a Jpac. Thx

Make sure your artwork directory is set in your Mame.ini file. Also go to "Core Artwork Options" in that file, and change all those settings to 1.

In game (such as Donkey Kong), press TAB to bring up Mame options. Choose Upright Artwork, Bezel enabled (the others don't matter for this game), and view = cropped.

When you edit the ini file, this might turn it on for other games, such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Just go into that same menu for that game and turn it to standard or pixel aspect (whichever works best for your screen.) These settings are saved for just the game you're on, and won't affect other games.

Thanks! I've always loved the bezels of classic games. It just adds to the fun of loading up a pac-man or Digdug. Im gonna give it a shot!

Since you're using HyperSpin, bezels are built right into RocketLauncher functionality. Look for user "gigapig" on Youtube. He is pretty active in the HyperSpin forums too. I think he has a Youtube tutorial on how to get the best bezel setup.
When you find great deals on Craigslist for CRT based cabs, exuberance :laugh2: can be a bad thing!
