New project... Slight Problem
« on: February 25, 2016, 12:37:48 am »
Hi all, I announced in here a while back that I am looking to build my first cabinet.  I have some experience in using emulators such as fusion, nestopia etc.

I have made a start on my cabinet already but I'm struggling with mame.  I'm not computer literate to the level of you guys.  I have limited knowledge.  I downloaded mameufix last night and a rom to test it.  For the life of me I can't get it to work.  I followed a YouTube tutorialstep by step and still nothing.

Can somebody give me an idiots guide to using and understanding mame?

Do I still need other emulators to run alongside mame

For example I want to put classic arcade games in it with nes, snes, megadrive and atari games also

Is this possible?

Much needed advice.  Will appreciate any feedback

Cheers Chris

I'm a newbie myself that just had to do all of that setup as well.  I don't know what front end you are planning on using or what tutorial you followed, but if you are interested in using Hyperspin I would recommend SimplyAustin on Youtube.  I followed his tutorials and they were an immense help for setting all of that up.  Also one thing I can suggest is that if you're intending to emulate a lot of those consoles you're mentioning you may want to look into RetroArch as it will pretty much handle all of those on its own.

I am thinking of purchasing Maximus Arcade.  I have heard Hyperspin is good, I will definitely be putting a front end on my system when constructed however want to ensure the software runs fine first of all.

So, RetroArch? Is this to be used instead of MAME or along side it?

Pardon my ignorance but again I am not the most computer literate person around.

Cheers

I believe RetroArch can run Mame as well, but I have them separate.  That being the case, the choice would just be up to you as to how you want to handle that part.  I don't really run Mame on its own with my setup as I have it running through Rocket Launcher personally, but I believe you'd have to go the Hyperspin route if you wanted to do it the same way.  I do believe the linked tutorials show you how to actually set up just Mame though.  You could probably at least get that far and then decide which direction to go on the front end.

If you can't get MAME to run with a single ROM I would avoid Hyperspin. It not a slight problem. In fact I think would avoid building a cab  >:D

Whilst I appreciate your honesty, I am still determined, the cab its self is coming on nicely... I just need the software to work haha

Make sure that the rom version and the Mame version match (if your rom is for Mame .149 and you try to run it with Mame .170, it might not work). Try getting a few more roms, sometimes a rom needs other files to work, perhaps it was your bad luck to try one of those.
Normally you just have to put the roms into the roms folder and start Mame.

Start with standard MAME. Put the downloaded ROM in the roms folder (no need to unzip). In a cmd window goto the folder MAME is in, type MAME DKONG (or whatever ROM you have) and hit enter.

You jinxed yourself by naming your project Slight Problem.
Games: Asteroids Deluxe | Atomiswave | Centipede | Championship Sprint | Defender | Donkey Kong | Dig Dug | Frogger | Ikari Warriors | Missile Command | Pac-Man | Pole Position | Robotron | Spy Hunter | Tempest | Super Mario Strikers

Well, what rom are you trying to get running?
sometimes multiple roms are required to run a single game.
One for the game, one for the bios, one for the sound board......

It was just Super Mario Bros.  It wouldn't work, again I am a complete and utter novice at all this.

I have followed SimplyAustin tutorials on Youtube, and appear to be making some progress, I have just downloaded Hyperspin and Mame, but need to follow his instructions on the set up.  Unfortuantely called into work so will have to do this tonight when I get home.

I'll keep you posted on my progress   ;D

IIRC MAME has a few free/legal ROMS on their home site available for download/testing.

Retroarch is a good all in one emulator but you might will have an easier time with the stand alone emulators such as fusion, nestopia, zsnes, etc.  Venture into retroarch once you've got the standalones figured out.

I started where you were, and I figured it out.   After a few hours.  Like 200 hours.

Stay away from Simply Austin for now.  He's for advanced newbs.

MAMEUIFX has an Audit ROMS function in the UI.  It's in one of the dropdown menus.  Do that.  It'll tell you if you're missing any files to run a ROM.

If you're using a PlayChoice version for Super Mario Bros and a Split version of the ROM, I'm pretty sure you're missing a PlayChoice support file. (It's called pcSOMETHING EDIT: derp.  See next post below....)

The file is "playch10".   ;D

If you use Hyperspin you don't want a UI version of MAME. And once again: if you are the noob you say (and sound) you should not start with HyperSpin...
