Atom flashed HD 4850 - Video Chipset incompatible?
« on: February 02, 2016, 05:06:18 pm »
Hi, I've just decided to overhaul my cab PC so installed Win 7 and Atom flashed an ATI HD 4850. The driver goes on with no problem and I've followed Calamity's setup guide (THANK YOU!), selecting everything as advised for super resolutions except for EDID Emulation as I understand it's not supported with HD 4xxx cards.

After generating and installing 15 modes, I've tested a game from the command line using the required switches for resolution and cleanstretch, however after I exit the game i get the message on the command line...

"Video chipset is not compatible - SwitchRes could not find a video mode that meets your specs."

The game seemed to run OK but may I say at a slightly lower resolution than I had before under XP. Definitely much blockier!

Also, This may be to do with having run VMM twice, but my default video card output is now on screen no. 4, meaning I've had to edit my mame.ini to display the image on that screen, even though there is nothing from 0-3.

In Windows, I;m showing multiple monitors under display properties, but only have my CRT connected. Any ideas how I can get it back to screen 0?

Restart your machine, or simply exit current session and start a new one, and your card will be listed again as \\.\DISPLAY1. Then restore the screen option in mame.ini to its usual value.

When VMMaker restarts the display device the numbers will change, but it only affects current session.

Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.

Thanks for that Calamity, I've managed to get the display numbers right again, but seem to be getting phantom Gen. PNP Monitors springing up when installing your driver now. Still getting the Video Chipset error too. Any ideas on that please?

Are you running GroovyMAME as administrator?

Those phantom monitors are expected and the guide explains how to deal with it.

No. Not running as admin, but I am following the wrong guide! Should have bought a newer card. Oh well. Thanks for the assist.

Ok, just in case someone else fails to find the right guide:

This one is for legacy cards (pre-HD 5000):
- Installing CRT Emudriver 2.0 - HD 4350 - Windows 7 - super resolutions

This one is for "new" cards (HD 5000 and newer)
- Installing CRT Emudriver 2.0 - HD 5450 - Windows 7 - super resolutions

You don't need to buy a new card, your HD 4850 will work just fine, but I must say that having tested the new ones I won't go back to the HD 4000s.

I might end up building another cab pretty soon. Is there one card you would recommend now?

If you want a cheap card, the 5450 works fine and has 2 analog output. The 6540 works fine and has 1 analog output. Anything above the 5000s seems to have only 1 analog output. If you're using it for a cabinet build you don't need 2 analog outputs anyway. For newer cards that've been already tested check this thread.

As always, thank you Calamity. You've done it again. GM running as admin, super resolutions enabled, surviving reboots, looks perfect. Now to see how easy it is to hide Windows 7. By the looks of it, it's not going to be as easy as using Quicksheller under XP, but we shall try.

THANK YOU!
