32 inch LCD Bartop
« on: January 29, 2016, 11:07:20 pm »
Hey all, I`m starting this new project with my cousing.
First I wanted to make a full cab with 32 inch lcd but fiancee freaked out when I told her.
So we decided to go smaller and make a bartop. But mantaining the same 32 inch screen.
Doesnt it kinda defeats the purpose of having a bartop? Although I won`t be carrying it around. Fiancee wants to hide it when not in use.
Going much smaller does not please me cause me and my friends are XL size and would fell cramped to play.   :dunno
We'll be playing mostly modern fighting games (SFV, KI, new KoF) so widescreen is a must.

So... I started a Sketchup project (1st time touching sketchup, take it easy).
Ripped off ChanceKJ's FLYNN and cut out the bottom part of it. The casters will be replaced by ajustable rubber feets.
The CP is not designer yet, but wont be anything groundbreaking. Just the standard 2-player 6-buttom spec.
I attached an image of what I came up so far.

Any comments on making a 32 inch bartop?

Best regards,

Gustavo.

Yeah, don't. It'll be 70% as heavy as a fullsize, but without the wheels to move it around. Hell, I am struggling with my tiny bartops, and they all have 15" screens.

I've built many a bartop and unless you got a perfect place for it to go, you'll end up wishing you made a bottom for it. You can make a pedestal or control panel and hook it directly to the TV or through a laptop. That could take care of the gaming itch and make it easy to put away when done.

I think the bigger concern is a fiance freaking out. :) Take it from the old timers, get it now before you get married. My wife is cool as hell about my hobbies. Good luck!

For something that size rather than a bartop Why not go with a pedestal and wall mount the TV -- that way the pedestal can be moved and hidden when not in use and the TV can be used as a TV (might even be able to convince the wife to go with a larger screen since it will serve dual purpose  ;D )

Figure if you plan out the positioning of the pedestal when playing you could hide the wiring in the wall and/or flooring and be able to disconnect when not in use and either have just the outlet for the connections in the wall. Or if run under the flooring cover the outlets with an area rug or couch/end table and not even know it was there.

Unless your playing fighting games your gonna waste 2/3rds of that TV.

However, go big or go home, its something over the top and different....You got my vote :applaud: :applaud:

Hi there,

Thank you for your replies! Decided to go big! :banghead:
I found these Galatic Starcade plans over the internet and decided to modify it to tightly fit a 32 inch screen.
All my measures are in metric system.
Got half MDF sheet (1,84m x 1,37m) and placed on our kludge workbench.  :dunno

Then we drew the side panel using a simple pencil.

Cut with a circular saw for the straight lines and jigsaw for the curves and we got this:

So with the first side cut, we used it as mold for the second side panel and then cut it.
Now was time to clamp both sides together and grinded the rough edges so we get 2 perfect equal pieces.

That was it for today. This project will take a while.
I`ll try to keep this updated!

By the looks of your design, i dont see how your gonna fit a 32" screen in there.

I'm looking at the depth of the curve, and angle of your marquee and speaker panel.  That thing is gonna have to be tilted alot.

Have you set the tv on the sides yet to test placement, you also need to have all of your other components, cause its gonna be a tight fit to get all of everything you need in this thing.

I thought my 23" vertical bartop was pushing the limits......

If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.
