I've searched the forums and can't find the answer to this question.  Some people imply that these are not designed to constantly switch back and forth between CGA, EGA, and VGA.  I know there are a lot of people on here who do this with their multi-syncs.  Has anyone experienced any problems or premature failures from doing this?

not really.

there is a circuit that monitors the frequency coming in to the monitor and switches the  monitor accordingly. that's the whole point.

feeding a single frequency monitor (like CGA) a higher resolution signal and trying to crank up the vertical and horizontal hold to get it synced on the other hand is very bad for it.. the HOT and vertical deflection IC's are not meant to switch at such a high rate and blow out.

a switchable monitor is meant to run at all manner of frequency. the only thing that may fail is the relays that do the high voltage switching for the yoke capacitance change. most monitors are smart enough to kill the HOT for the change so it's not really stressful.  no more stressful than switching a relay can be...they are rated for thousands of cycles before failure anyways.
