  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
Hello, this is telonio from Greece, I've been here around two months reading threads but never registered until now.

I have a pal crt tv model sony kv-29c5b trinitron 50hz 220-240v. I am trying to get the best picture to the tv so I can play sega rally and daytona with sega m2 emulator at 60hz.

The pc's that I have for this job is an amd 2core 64bit 4200 with 2.5gb ram, 80gb ide hdd,  ati hd 3450 and windows xp pro 32bit sp3. The other pc is an intel 2core 2.66 with 2gb ram, 80gb sata hdd, ati hd 3870 and windows 7 64bit sp1. I am using umsa scart from arcadeforge and soft15khz to send the vga signal to the crt tv.

The problem is that the tv image has some annoying flickering that makes the m2 emulator games awful. I can't reduce the windows resolution below 640x480. Tried xp quickres but it doesn't show resolution below 640x480. This issue happens with both pc's and both ati vga cards.

Maybe this is the flickering issue? A lower resolution should solve the problem?
How can I set a lower resolution in windows if quickres doesn't supports this?

Thanks all

Normally people use the Ultimate Scart Adapter to output 240p signals to their TV's. That way you get proper scanlines and everything is the same resolution as it would be in the arcade and/or from a console. The flickering you are describing is probably because it is in 480i at the moment. In 240p there would be no flickering.

Thanks Don,

Finally I lowered the 640x480 resolution by simply changing the resolution value in m2 emulator ini. The image is stable now and m2 is playable, but in 400x264 it is not the same as the arcade sega rally monitor. The sega nano monitor I guess it should be 31khz and support 640x480 resolutions or above. This resolution is good for most mame games, but for m2 is not that good just not arcade perfect.

Ah yes, the native resolution of Sega Rally would be 640x480 (480p) and so you would need a 31khz monitor,  so ideally a PC CRT monitor. A standard TV can only do 480i  (so with flickering) or 240p for 2d games.

Yes a 31hkz monitor should be perfect for this project. Well, and I don't think that a pc crt monitor of 29" is easy to find. Especially in my country where the biggest pc crt monitor I have seen is 21".  :banghead:

Also Sega Rally is a 25kHz medium resolution game (496x384), NOT 31kHz.
I do all that stuff even without a Joystick ;)

apfelanni my country is in Europe but I've never seen a crt tv with vga input. At least all the crt tv's I have seen, most had svideo and rgb scart. I doubt if there is any crt with vga input in Greece. Even if I find one in another European country , I think  it would be too risk to ship a 29" crt.

SailorSat Thanks for information about Sega Rally.

there had been around dozends of crt tvs with pc vga in capabilitys made by various manufacturers like grundig , metz , loewe , philips , lg , panasonic , thomson , colani and more . they are available in 4:3 ratio in 21, 25, 28,29 ,33 , 37 inch and in 16:9 with 82 and 94 cm tubes . they can be usually picked up for a few bucks , sometimes for free . dont u have a buddy somewhere in central europe who can do the transport job ?

My wife's brother he is living in UK but he can't help much for this. I am trying to find and build the circuit for modding the pal crt tv with a vga input. I like to build circuits but there is not much information on the web about this mod.

I am still trying to get a decent image without flickering for the m2 in the 29" crt sony trinitron tv. If I set the windows xp resolution to 464x256 there is no flickering while m2 is running in full window mode. Flickering shows only when I select  full screen.

Anybody has an idea how to fix this when running full screen mode?
