Robotron and Dad
« on: January 16, 2016, 09:51:29 am »
Ok, so my father and I were playing Robotron and he had commented my controls were too touchy (Considering these sticks are brand new, yes they're touchy and clicky) however he had also commented that Robotron Didn't feel "the Same", after discussing when Robotron had came to his arcade hang, he had noted that it arrived in 1982 exactly, therefore the Robotron he played was in my opintion 90% possibly what's referred to the Red/Yellow Romset.

Besides that, having played a Robotron cabinet, I also noticed that when the Robotron CPU gets hot, the game "mellows out" and slows down a small fraction depending on the action on the screen, which seems to be missing from Mame as it's running at nearly 100% efficiency (I have a core i5 CPU, so robotron is no sweat) and it's not accurate to how the machine behaves...

Does anyone also notice that some games run "too Perfect" or in my dad's words "Linear, like a stream instead of chunks" or am I having a nice Saturday Pipe to the head?
Is that a Sanwa in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

You're over -analyzing.

It's muscle memory, not CPU performance, that your father is noticing. Short, twitchy, clicky sticks feel vastly different from 4" Wicos.

That difference eclipses any difference in play speed, particularly 25 years later.

Get hold of some real Wico 8 way leaf sticks.   Thats a huge part in how Robotron reacts, feels, controls.

However,  its also been stated by other Robotron fans.. that indeed the mame version does play faster and smoother at times.
The original did in fact, have moments of slow-down.    Where as Mame did not.    Im not so sure it was about heat.   I think it was more to do with the number of things on screen at once.

I thought that some changes were made to help remedy this issue... but my memory is a bit fuzzy.
