Windows 7 or 10?
« on: January 10, 2016, 07:36:21 am »
Hi.

I'm creating a windows usb bootable with Groovymame and retroarch.

Asuming I'll use a laptop with mobility hd5650 for 15khz through the Vga port, which windows version do you recommend?

Thanks.

I'd use 7 by now, unless you want to experiment.

Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.

Definatley 7.  Win10 is better than 8, but there is just SOOO much crap in it that 7 is just a better choice for a cab.

I tried windows 10 becouse I didnt have any windows 7 at hand for now.

Just installed 2.0 beta 5 and installed perfectly without any BSOD. Even I cannot install catalyst drivers on windows 7 and have to use outdated PackardBell ones with a mobility HD 5650, that problem seems to be gone with windows 10.
Still got to try CRT emu driver in windows 7.

Upon the required restart for drivers installation windows went on test mode.

I could run vmmaker and create 15 khz modes but the driver rejected them (I guess due to be out of the range of the monitors as I am working with the laptop LCD and a Sony full HD TV through HDMI as I don't have any VGA-Scart cable here :( )

ArcadeOSD shows modes through 640x480 to 1600x900 that seem to work perfectly and the TV shows a duplicated screen from the laptop LCD (not an extended one).

Gotta test a bit more and get a scart cable, but so far looks promising :)

When I have time I'll create the bootable windows 7 to try.

Hi pakoman,

Once you have your vga->scart cable, make sure to enable EDID emulation on the VGA output (not sure if it'll be Analog_0 or Analog_1). Then select the second video device as target. It will show the name of the EDID you're using. Only then, generate the 15 kHz modes. Those will be only available for that output. That's one of the many advantages of the HD 5000+ cards: video modes can be targeted reliably to the proper output.

Hi.

I've got the cable and it's working as long as I enable a 15khz edid emulation. It shows an extended 15 kHz desktop on the tv. But still rejects adding modes to the driver. Most probably I'm doing something wrong. I have to follow carefully the tutorial.

However, this confirm that it works on laptops with Mobility HD 5650 :) Thanks Calamity!

It works perfectly under windows 10 with a notebook.

Only difference is that instead of swapping cables you have to disable the first screen -laptop LCD- and set the second one -the tv- as main desktop when adding the video modes. Then everything goes as expected.

However I've found some small issues just in case they're of any interest:

I installed drivers 2.0 beta 5. Trying to install beta 8 on top of them will crash windows and need to restart.
ArcadeOSD beta 8 and VMmaker beta 8 seem to work perfectly with beta 5 drivers.

ArcadeOSD only display grid test modes on the LCD laptop screen, when I try to display a grid test video mode on the TV it always shows a black screen, although the mouse cursor can be seen and the mode works with Mame or as a desktop resolution.
