Can the arcade vga run windows desktop in vertical mode?
« on: January 10, 2004, 10:53:24 am »
Anyone here have an arcade VGA and a vertical mounted monitor?  Do the drivers for the arcade VGA let you display your windows desktop in a vertical mode (portrait)?  I know some video card drivers have this for LCD monitors that swivel.

Yes, however Mame32 can't be launched when the desktop is vertical.  :(

Some problem with the way ATI treats things in vertical mode.

I have the ArcadeVGA with a vertical monitor in a cocktail cabinet.  My understanding is that Win98 will not allow portrait mode, but that it will work with Win2K and XP.  Since I'm using Win98, I'm stuck with landscape.

I have win98SE and my ArcadeVGA can work in rotated mode. However, as you have mentioned, MAME32 won't run games, while your desktop is configured like that. Have you tried standard MAME? I would be a pity to have to use MAME instead or MAME32, but it would be great to have windows displayed vertically when you have your monitor or tv rotated. Also, who should we address this issue to? Andy or the MAME32 team?

It's an ATI driver problem.  Andy already talked about it on the Ultimarc forums.  Appearently a regular ATI card with a PC monitor with desktop rotated won't be able to launch Mame32 either.

I never tried regular mame rotated (because I'd use ArcadeOS, which makes the Windows desktop orientation moot).

Tom, this driver problem should only exist under Windows98. There are a couple of other issues with 98 as well, such as auto-pan not working. I spent a lot of time trying to get ATI interested in this but no joy.
Everything should work fine in XP including vertical MAME32.

There is a program called proview that will rotate windows however you want it. I think there is a demo. email me if interested I might can help you find it ;)
Also...beware that this program does use some resources. I was not happy with it because I have a slower machine (700mhz) in my vertical cab. So I stuck with DOS and arcadeos which rotates wonderfully.
