Aimtrak and MAME problems
« on: November 08, 2015, 01:58:06 pm »
Having issues with new Aimtrak light gun.

First issue (and possibly all) is due to my incompetence. I can’t find the mame.ini file to make the recommended Ultimarc changes. Where is mame.ini? I have Hyperspin with RocketLauncher if that matters.

When I try to calibrate the gun, the arrow starts on the top left, but doesn’t go all the way to the left. It goes off the top of the screen 1-2” from the edge. Top right arrow is fine. Bottom arrow does not respond. I shoot and shoot, it just keeps rolling. I ultimately have to unplug the usb because this renders my mouse useless. Even after all of this, the light gun moves the mouse arrow pretty well around the Windows screen.

In Mame, general settings, when I go to set up lightgun x analog and lightgun y analog, “gun # x” and “gun # y” don’t show up. Instead some type of “mouse x…” or something lke that shows up. The end result is that the light gun is not useable.

Anybody have ideas?

The top left arrow isn't supposed to go all the way left when you configure the aimtrak, so you're good. If the arrow at the bottom never registers, the first make sure that the infrared LEDs are pointing down towards the aimtrak. Next turn off the tilt correction. If you still have an issue, then you might be sitting too close. Also, if the round lens on the camera had slipped off or moved, then it is possible that the adhesive smudged. So make sure that the center of the lens is clean.

I found three mame.ini files and changed them to:

#
# CORE INPUT OPTIONS
#
joystick 1
lightgun 1
offscreen_reload 1

I think the gun is working correctly. The arrow tracks all over the screen when I point the gun. I still can’t get Mame to work right however. In the general settings, in player 1 controls, Lightgun X analog does not give the option of “gun # X”. It always gives me “Mouse 1 X-axis Mouse 1 Y-axis” when I move the gun horizontally.

Lightgun Y analog does not give the option of “gun # Y”. It always gives me “Mouse 1 Y-axis” when I move the gun vertically.

It doesn’t see the device as a light gun. Any ideas?

It won't.  Your PC sees the Aimtrak as a mouse.  Set your lightgun to mouse in controller options

Thanks, what controller options screen are you referring to? Within the Aimtrak configuration utility? Within Mame config screen?

In MAME.

Click "options" ->
default game options ->
then the "controller mapping tab"

Map lightgun to mouse

That didn't fix it. The crosshair only goes from top left corner to bottom right corner in a straight line. Can't move it aroud the screen in Mame.

It sounds like you have the X-axis and the Y-axis mapped to the same movement.  These HAVE to be separate.  Watch this video and you'll see what I mean.  This should get you going

Also, I told you something wrong by mistake, you do want to set the lightgun as a lighgun in the controller mapping tab.  Not a mouse like I had previously said.  Sorry about the mixup.

I did everything in the video. It seems like the mame.ini file is not set up right. The cursor moves around the screen ok when I’m not in Mame. I think the lightgun is disabled in Mame somehow because it still doesn’t show up as an option when configuring controls, just “Mouse 1 X-axis Mouse 1 Y-axis” when I move the gun horizontally and “Mouse 1 Y-axis” when I move the gun vertically. I found about three separate mame.ini files. Maybe I missed one.

Yeah having the X and Y axis assigned to one axis is the problem.  I just don't know how to fix it for you from here.  I use MAMEUI so it is just a matter of doing it over and over again until you get perfectly horizontal movement with the gun and it registers just the X axis assigned to the X axis.

Make sure axis INC and axis DEC aren't mapped to anything.

When all else fails, read the instructions.

I think axis INC and axis DEC are in fact mapped to something. The instructions said they can be set to none. I'll go ahead and do that.
