Vertical size problem with crt.
« on: November 01, 2015, 11:54:13 am »
Hi all.
First post, hoping to get some help with the issue i'm having.
I have a Sony CRT TV (kv-25c5a) connected to my pc using a vga to scart cable.
I'm using an ati hd 4350 with crt emudriver and groovymame, win7x64 and super resolutions.
The issue i'm having is that every game that uses Vfreq between 50-60hz causes the vertical size to exceed the screen, games that use 60 or 50hz are fine, but games that use, for example, 54.707 like mortal kombat, exhibit this problem.
Resolution doesn't seem to make a difference, even if i try a game with 224 vres and 57hz it will still cause this problem.
i tried every monitor preset i could to no avail, currently using custom made which helped me with horizontal shifting.
I could change the vsize from the service menu but then it changes it for all modes.
English isn't my native language, so forgive me for any mistake i may have done.
If more information is needed, do let me know.
Thanks.

That's how it works. TVs (at least my including Sony Trinitron 29 '') have two factory presets for 50 and 60 Hz modes. Since 54 Hz is between changing size will change default 50 Hz preset mode. The same goes for 57 Hz. The only way is to manually adjust size in service mode.

i'm a little confused with: "50hz mode is fine",  "60hz mode is fine", but anything inbetween (eg. 51hz or 59hz) is bad. that seems like strange behaviour (even for a tv).

Upon further investigation it seems to exceed the H-size as well, but not as much as the V-size.
Again, in 50Hz and 60Hz games everything is fine.
I think haynor is right, it's probably because of the tv, since i tried just about everything i could think of and... nothing.
Even tried playing around with the custom settings, but didn't get much results.

Its not the TV, its how the games where made ;)  and yes, haynor666 is right, you can only manually adjust this. Arcade games where dedicated, single games in a cab. The monitor in a cab was adjusted ONCE to fit the game properly and then delivered to customers. Arcade games where never intended for use on TVs in a home environment.

You on the other side, want to play now thousands of arcade games with a single tv... this case was never intended by manufactorers.

GroovyMame has nearly over everything control, except V-size because it cant be controlled by software. You have only two options, either adjust it everytime with your servicemode or find a good "in the middle" setting.

If your H-size exceed, then your TV is not properly calibrated or use overscan, because this is something if correctly adjusted it should be ok for all games, as GroovyMame will automagically adjust it properly.

So your TV is properly working with the two modes 50/60Hz, because you will not find a single console that operates outside this range (i.e. 54Hz or 57Hz).
"Computer games don't affect kids; I mean if Pac-Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music."
