Making some Artwork for Mamewah...
« on: January 08, 2004, 10:21:45 am »
I was thinking it would be nice to use mamewah and then point a window to some art that would show a layout of a persons control panel, or something similar with a description of what each button does for that specific game.

And I was wondering if someone has already done something like this or do I need to look into doing it myself slowly over time?

I just think it would be nice to show people what does what before they hit the 1p button and start the game.

I will be adding something like this (as will most fe dev's no doubt) at some point to support the controls.dat project (& the ctrlr ini files).

I guess the quicker the project is 'complete', the quicker it will happen.   See http://fe.donkeyfly.com if you want to help :)

That is what I was talking about.

What would really be cool but would take time is for it to be dynamic.

You would allow someone to have a pic similar to their layout.  And on the layout screen, allow someone to put in Button1-button8.

And if the game uses that button would place the text of that button use in the space designated by the user.  Than someone could have a stock picture of their control panel, with only the button names being dynamic.

Of course, this would be the best solution to me, but may be coding intensive.

My understanding is that Howard Casto is working on something like that... I cobbled something similar in the meantime for my cab (a script pre-generates static pics that are loaded just like artwork in mamewah) but it's a pain to re-generate everything when the controls.dat file is updated.

The beta viewer can do some of these things, but be warned... From my personal tests I've found that even the simpliest of layouts can only be read in fullscreen.  I suppose if it filled the whole bottom of the screen, but that's a big stretch.  The best way to use it is in a dual screen setup, or to have a button in the fe call the app when you want to look at it.

I think I'm gonna go ahead and release the beta sometime next week.  You guys should help test (hint hint).
