Installing CRT_emudriver issues, help?
« on: October 13, 2015, 05:51:37 am »
Before getting into this, I have Window 7 64-bit and am pursuing authentic hardware look of emulators on my Panasonic 20+ inch CRT TV through a cheap VGA-RCA converter.

I'm new to getting into 15hz simulating software. Since I figured out CRT-EMUdriver was
a possibility for me as my onboard GPU was a ATI 4250, and heard that onboards would work as well.

After downloading the files, I restarted my PC then went into the bios to make my main GPU the onboard one (My main one is a GTX 560 TI card)
restarted again with only the CRT TV plugged in, and carefully set them up by the directions of one of the tutorial and was going the "Super res" route since I was on Windows 7. Making sure I opened the programs as Admin when needed. After all that, I once again restarted and everything pre-windows was being displayed normal, but then when it got to Windows itself it had a really messy, glitchy display where I couldn't see anything. Along the lines of these

I had to plug my LCD TV as a secondary monitor and thankfully it displayed normal Windows. On it, I set the resolution on the TV (where I found out it was at the lowest res of 2##x2## meaning it was partly successful ) higher for a little bit, but it made a similar glitch screen then I switched it back to where it was and...It displayed that same resolution in normal. But then the problem this time was...it didn't fill the whole screen even though I think it showed what it could at that res. It showed the whole screen in just the upper half of the TV and it was only a line or two out of the screen to the right, everything else was black.

I checked out Arcade_OSD, not knowing a lot on how to use it, or how to fix my issue using it. But I looked at the list of modelines and tried some of the lowest ones out which displayed half screen like the original. I found the usual 640x480 on the list tried it to make sure it still worked normal and it didn't. It started showing that same glitch screen so I had to press ESC to revert. I found out all those higher resolutions were doing that. I decided to go back to one of the lower res and try to edit it to fill the screen, probably wasn't the smartest choice because I didn't know what everything meant with all the numbers, frequencies etc, but I couldn't find much documentation to explain. I tried the res with interlacing, tried it for a while. IDR what happened after but later while on another resolution, I looked at that same resolution on the modeline list and some of it's info was blank and instead of custom it said Native, it wouldn't let me edit it anymore.

I thought if I ran the VMmaker again it would refresh it back to that list so I did that, restarted. Then the glitch screen happened again. I went to the screen resolutions on the other monitor and it only showed that the TV was at 640x480 while the only other options were 2### x2## - 480 which would do the same thing. This is where I gave up, I witched back the my main card and everything was normal. I could use Windows restore to redeem myself at this, but before I do I need help with this.

I'd like advice based on my goal and situation. Again, I want to be able to run older console emulators fullscreen at the native resolution, ratio etc on my CRT TV so that it looks closer to what the real hardware would look when connected to it. My CRT TV is a 20+ inch Panasonic CT-27624A. I'm on Windows 7 64-bit, my onboard GPU that I'm trying to use CRT_emudriver with is an ATI 4250 through a VGA to RCA converter.

I mainly need help understanding how to use Arcade OSD as long as it needs to be used, using it to edit the modelines, and use the right settings for my TV. Does anyone happen to know what I needed to do, possibly in Arcade OSD to get the 2## x 2## to fill the whole screen? And just to make sure would my TV be 15KHZ?

Thank you for your time going through this.

through a cheap VGA-RCA converter.

That's the problem. You need to feed your TV with an RGB signal directly from your VGA (VGA->SCART). Or through component video if your TV doesn't have a SCART, using a transcoder to convert the RGB signal from the VGA to component video.

Remind: component, NOT composite.

Thank you for that quick, helpful and simple answer.

Would the other alternatives like Soft15khz work in my case or do I need to convert to Component period? (I live in the US where SCART TV's are super rare)

And for TV's without scart, are you saying I need to convert from VGA to Scart/RGB and then to Component or just from VGA to component? (my converter indeed does just yellow composite)

Soft-15khz and CRT Emudriver are much the same. You need to convert to component if you want genuine custom video. Check this forum for info about transcoders, specifically the posts by the user rCadeGaming.

The box you're using just downscales anything it's fed with to a fixed resolution. It expects a 31 kHz signal as input.

You need to convert to component if you want genuine custom video.

Alright, just VGA>Component
or VGA>SCART\RGB>Component?

It's direct VGA->Component.

Look at this one for instance: http://www.curtpalme.com/TC1600.shtm

As I said, check rCadeGaming posts and find what equipment he's recommending.
