[SOLVED] What aspect ratio is your typical arcade game?
« on: October 09, 2015, 07:40:59 pm »
I'm going to be using a 32" LED TV place vertically in my cabinet, however I want to cover the top and bottom areas of the display since the entirety of the 16:9 TV won't be used. I was under the assumption that the tallest aspect ratio would have been 3:4 (3 across, 4 tall). Is that correct?

I'd plug everything into my monitor and just test games directly but I don't have my monitor yet and I want to get an idea of dimensions in Sketchup before building anything.

Thanks in advance!

You are correct.  Arcade games used standard CRT tubes which were a 4:3 ration.  The vertical games used the same tubes and just mounted them sideways in the cabinet.

Cool. So was that the tallest they got? Were there any games that were every taller than 4:3 in a vertical orientation? I just need to be sure before I block off part of my screen that could have been utilized.

Nothing "taller".  There were a few games that used multiple 4:3 CRT's in a horizontal layout to get a super wider display.  Darius is the poster child of doing that.
