  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
So.... I'm new to this....
« on: October 07, 2015, 04:20:42 pm »
Now I have had emulators in the past.... I have limited knowledge on them.  A friend of mine has put me onto the idea of doing a arcade cabinet as he has finally completed his.  My question,

What do I need to get started...?

Here's what I'm thinking....

Download all the emulators I want for what consoles.... download the roms I require....
Then download some fronted thing.... I'm thinking maximus arcade... don't mind paying for it.

Is this right or am I missing something...?

Or does maximus arcade come with the roms and emulators...?

Kind of stuck here

I'm going to tread lightly so here goes...

You are already too far ahead of yourself.

First decide what kind of cab you want to build. Cocktail or Upright? Horizontal or Vertical? 1 player, 2 player, or 4 player? etc.

I'd start with these questions first and that helps you narrow it down real quick. Then decide what kind of ARCADE games you want to play on the cab. Unless there are some NES games you want, you'll probalby find that console games should remain on consoles themselves.

In other words...my rule of thumb is decide what kind of cab you want and make a list of "must have games" (I bet it is less than 25 or so) and then build your cab around that.

Cheers for the speedy replies guys

I'm going with an upright cabinet for 2 players

All the old arcade games donkey Kong pacman mario bros Street fighter mortal kombat etc etc along with some of the old console games too...

I know they don't transfer all that we'll but I like them all the same

In that case, you are now entering the world of having to run horizontal and vertical games on the same screen. So I assume LCD/LED display?

If so, might I suggest running a ~42in display (possibly de-cased) turned vertical. This will allow you to have the proper width on horizontal games.

In other words, (IMO) you are better off playing horizontal games on a vertical display rather than the other way around. There are a couple of threads here where builders have done this.

Maximus' build did this. Maybe not a build that is unanimously praised but neat nonetheless.

I have 2 monitors.... I have an old crt monitor in the attic which is 19" also I have a 23" monitor lcd wide-screen... the build isn't really of concern to me at present it's more the soft Ware. .. if I can get it to work on my computer now before I build a cabinet I will then decide on my cabinet project.  A friend of mine as built two and is pretty good with that but it's the software side I'm struggling with

Any suggestions?

You can also check my signature for a current build using a 42" vertical.
