Golden Axe The Revenge Of Death Adder Restoration
« on: September 29, 2015, 04:57:16 pm »
Hello!, First i would like to introduce myself, I'm Jcmaster, i'm 24 and for 8 years i been working repairing computers, videogame consoles, smartphones and tablets, i'm a videogame enthusiast, recently i moved to my old chilhood home and i get some nostalgia to see the old "corner store" closed, in there i had my first experience with Arcades, i used to play Mortal Kombat, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Sunset Riders, Street Fighter etc... So i decided to buy a cabinet to make my own Multi System Arcade and today i bring to you the beginning of this.

I want to show you my Golden Axe The Revenge Of Death Adder Cabinet

As you can see, the cabinet is in pretty bad shape, the original game was thrown away and was replaced with a first gen xbox wich was "hacked" to run multiple games, the panel was replaced with a 9 button layout wich is common for the xbox multigame system, the side art is all full of holes and the wood from the back and bottom has water damage.

I got this cabinet almost for free, i bought it from a local bussines wich is going through tough times, they are replacing all of this awesome original cabinets fro some generic "swan" style cabinets wich are lighter, easier and cheaper to transport, so the owner of the business almost pays me to take this one and a original 1992 midway Mortal Kombat cabinet.

I didn't gave it a second thought, i took them both home, and started planing what i was going to do with them, i plan to sell one and keep the other, i dont know yet wich one to keep but i will start with this one because this one is in better shape than the Mortal Kombat one.

This one, has as i said, water damage in the back and bottom wood panels, the side art is destroyed, the original button panel is full of holes, is missing the back door, and the t molding and some other little details.

But the other side of the coin is that, the original marque is in perfect condition, also, they gave me 3 coin mechanisms, the are coinmech .800 token, they are working perfect.

(thanks to my brother for holding the marquee)

I know i have a lot of work in front of me but i think it's worth it, they are awesome cabinets and i fell in love with them at first glance, they were dirty and full of garbage but awesome.

I want to make this one a multi game system, im planning to add a computer with a 19" monitor to it, i already cut the new button panel and this is the layout i'm planning to use.

I think this layout will give me some freedom to add systems later.

I want to light the marquee with a strip of super bright white led's that i have laying around, i wasn't able to get the tube light the size of the marquee.

So, that is my cabinet until this moment, i will be bringing updates an questions as i continue to work on this beauty, greetings from Mexico!

Most of your pictures seem to be broken.

Damn... 24 years young? You must have been barely alive when most of those games you played came out! Actually, I don't think you were even alive when they first came out! "just a twinkle in your daddy's eye" at that point. I really hope you're not a trenster/hipster just getting into the hobby for the "street cred".

Who threw the original board away??!?  For the longest time that game wasn't even emulated properly (luckily it is now)...but the board is worth over $200+ USD these days!  So if you're actually planning on doing a proper restoration, you'll probably have to get your hands on one.

I didn't gave it a second thought, i took them both home, and started planing what i was going to do with them, i plan to sell one and keep the other, i dont know yet wich one to keep but i will start with this one because this one is in better shape than the Mortal Kombat one.

Other than the side-art (which I would try to scan and re-vector, if you can't find replacement art), most of the issues are fixable. People have done some intensive work on water damaged areas, using Bondo and replacement wood. You can pretty much pick any restoration project in this forum and chances are good they they've gone through some water damage repair at some point.

I want to make this one a multi game system, im planning to add a computer with a 19" monitor to it, i already cut the new button panel and this is the layout i'm planning to use.
Annnnnnd, there it is.  This doesn't make this a restoration in that case, it's a Mame conversion. :(
 :banghead:
Looks like this should be moved out of Restorations and into Project Announcements

Now the images are working i hope

Well, as i said, i live in Mexico, in those years, all of the technology from the world came here at least 8 years late, i received the super nintendo in 1998 and by that time it was the newest console here in Mexico, so by the time i get the chance to play Arcades, when i was at least 5 years old, they where new here but old in U.S.A, and don't worry, im not a hipster, i have a special place in my heart and mind for videogames because they are one of my oldest memories, mi dad had a NES when i was 2 years old and he would always give me money to spend in the arcades.

The original board was thrown away by the company where i bought the cabinets, yeah i know it was an awful thing to do, but here the kids are more interested in GTA San Andreas on the xbox so they had to convert all this cabinets for use with the "hacked" 1st gen xbox.

Today i bought a palm sander, bondo and a lot of sand paper and the wood is going great, it is amazing what those little tools and bondo can do.

And yeah, i know this is not a proper restoration, sorry, checking costs, is kinda expensive for me to get locally the game board, and i already bought the computer so if you can help me to move this thread to the corresponding place, sorry for the inconvenient

No problem, compadre. I live in the U.S.A., and I always got stuff late in run as well. If you need anything or have any questions, let me know.

That artwork always bugged me.  The dude gets a big sword and the girl/centaur gets a pool noodle on a stick.  WTF?

*snort*
It's called a pugil stick.

Definite WTF factor since it's padded and used for hand-to-hand rifle/bayonet training.   :duckhunt

Yes, yes.  I know what it's called.  I just thought "pool noodle on a stick" was funnier.  :p

This was the game that made me want to learn MAME,  I remembered it fondly from one trip to the local mini golf batting cages place we had in Tulsa several years back.

It's funny, once I actually played it again 15-20 years later, it wasn't as good as I remembered.

I always liked Trix but, to get the most out of him you need a partner.

OP:  What are your plans for controls?

As you can see in the pictures, the company from wich i got them, modified completely the button panel, the original panel has in total 21 button holes and the joysticks holes, also the size of the  "box" for the panel (i don know the name for it) is neither the size of the 4 player version nor the size of the 2 player version so i cut a piece of plywood the size of the older one and im using this layout for the controls

Im planning on placing the 2 start buttons and a buton to exit the games, the cabinet has the original service panel with 2 buttons and a potentiometer so i will put the volume, computer on/off button there

Hello, i have some updates, today, my brother and i, sanded the upper back panels of the cabinet, we used some bondo to cover some holes on the wood and we painted them, also i re-cut the controls panel because i accidentally used a biger bit for the buttons hole and messed up the piece, i cut the back door because the original was missing, i ordered some parts i need from the Mexican version of Ebay and ordered the vinyls of the side art, a little simplier than the originals but they will work

And after sanding and painting, it looks in a blue tone because we were covering from the sun in a blue shade

Tomorrow we will try to finish the back, i want to make a stand for the computer with the button panel that i screwed up and make the button holes in the new panel, see you later
