Problem with my NBA JAM cabinet monitor-in Greece
« on: September 27, 2015, 01:35:19 pm »
Good afternoon! (it's afternoon here anyway)
I've been a visitor for some time here,i have been restoring
and been in love with my arcade stuff for some time, but unfortunately
its my time to ask a question for my latest purchase-a MIDWAY's Nba Jam.

I've bought it almost a month ago from a guy that his dad used to own
an arcade place up til '98 and since he closed it he kept some cabinets
in a basement somewhere in Athens.
The machine itself was in a poor condition, mainly on the outside, and as he said
the monitor wasn't working at all (he mentioned that it made a glass-breaking sound
and stopped working last time he checked it).
Nevertheless i bought it for spare parts to give it a shot.

As i brought it back home and after i cleaned it from it's dusty kingdom,
i was surprised to see that as i turned it on,the monitor was working totally fine!
The only problem was the switching power supply that was into smokes after 5 sec
and i had to replace it immediately.

The unfortunate thing is that due to the constant change of goverments and elections here,
the banks have had put on the people capital control, and that means
the last two months we cant buy anything from abroad with the use of paypal.
(i will hold myself and not comment into this)

Since this happened-and while the Greek market for arcade spare parts exist in
a parallel universe along with hobbits and elves, i had to use
my old power supply from another arcade cabinet until this "capital control"
stops.
Anyway,NBA JAM as a game was working flawless, the monitor still had
some issues mostly in the windth changing and some distortion on the edges(becoming
more round) that never got to be fixed only with the knobs behind,
but still was playing just fine up til yesterday.

The colors started to flash back and forth from normal to "washed"
and staying in "washed" mode almost permanent.
Saying almost means that some times when i start it up,it will have the normal colors
but after 10-20 sec it will start the same all over again.
One thing that i noticed today is that the split second that i press the
button to turn off the machine, the colors jump back to normal. of course
its just for a blink but still its visible.
I took some pics of the back of the screen, the white-blue sticker unfortunately
couldnt be removed to take better pics, but i tried the best i can.
Along with the pics of the back of the monitor im uploading
couple of pics that i had the chance to take before the change of colors and after.

My knowledge in the electronic stuff is limited to soldering and connecting jamma
wires and buttons and unfortunately the last known computer made in my native language
was the antikythera mechanism  ;D so i will try my best to follow you in any terms
that you could be using.

Thanks again for your time!

As it says on the stickers that i uploaded ( http://share.pho.to/9k4IY ),
its made by hantarex-italy,although on the tube has another that says made in france.
The model maybe is in these part numbers again on the sticker, but i dont have a clue which one.

It's a Polo with the PSU circuit metal cage removed (maybe they serviced it in the past and never put back the cage).
If it was mine, i would check the main and neckboard PCBs for cracks and cold solders, then replace the electrolithic caps.
Don't service this switching PSU monitors without an ISO transformer. Keep your hands far from the left side of this monitor (where the PSU circuit is) when it's running because of the risk of electrocution.
Anyway, the operations i suggested must be done on the workbench, off the grid.

its not a hantarex chassis, someone has stuck hantarex stickers on it

it is a ca&g vi2500

really bad chassis, they suffer from bad flybacks, bad power supply transformers and caps

I knew ca&g made a copy of the mtc9000, but i was not aware about this, so i assumed it was a "weird" polo. Sorry for the wrong info ;)

i would suggest swapping it out with a polo 1 chassis, just a few adapters to make for it to fit + swap blue and red signal input

thanks guys for your answers.
i sure wished that it would be the old power supply that i put
and caused all this trouble and that's that.
I really had no idea that the monitor was not only different than the sticker's brand,
but the one that i have is such a bad quality.
I searched about it and as it seems all the ca&g vi2500 monitors have the same
psu circuit cage removed like mine and people (mostly in spain and italy) complain about being dysfunctional.nice...
I cant check and replace electrolithic caps as i dont have the knowledge or the workbench for it ,but i will give it a shot and check the cold solders.
Now changing a monitor chassis would be a good solution but in no way
i will be able to find one here.
like i said the Greek market for these machines died in 1998
when the government decided that  all these type of games were illegal
and were literally thrown into dumpsters at the time :-[

if you mean to get it by swimming into greece, then i dont think it would be a good idea.
its difficult even for a man to swim from turkey til here, imagine a chassis from usa

like i said the Greek market for these machines died in 1998

There was a company called GDTronics in Athens that manufactured arcade monitors. I bought a few 15khz chassis from them in 2011. They're no longer in business now but they wer until a couple of years ago so I don't think their stock vanished into thin air. Try getting in contact with the owner (George Dounis). And in any case their used products must be still around.
