Yet another Supercade clone
« on: August 28, 2015, 04:43:33 pm »
I remember seeing the Supercade http://cosmicjive.net/arcade/super/ back in the early 2000s and always wanting to build one, but never got around to it for various reasons.

My daughter has always wanted to build it with me, so we finally got started since this is her senior year in high school and time is running out.

We are about to start on the control panel, which is causing the most agonizing (which controls, 2 or 4 player, so many decisions....). I will most likely stick to the original design (two-level) as I want a spinner and flight stick for Tron, with some minor updating.

Below are a few pictures of the cabinet in current form, sitting in the living room.

Thanks to this forum and all the contributions which have proven very helpful.

Started work on the control panel this weekend, but weather and other things didn't allow much progress.

I decided to go with a two player panel since I would not use four player too often. This also allowed me to reduce the width of the control panel from the Supercade design, which I thought looked a bit too wide.

Below are the upper and lower panels. I got about halfway through building the box for the lower panel before I got rained out.

I didn't have much time over the holiday weekend to finish the control panel, but the wood work is mostly done.

I still need to router out the front edges for the t-moulding and then prime/paint.

I'm still undecided on laminate color for the control surfaces. I thought I would do gray like the original Supercade, but not quite sure yet.

I also need to order my controls soon.

I haven't posted in awhile here, but finally managed to mostly complete my cabinet.

The controls and electronics were bought from Ultimarc, very happy with the overall order, shipped very quick. My only comment on the controls is that the J-Sticks (Sanwa JLW-TM-8 type) are really horrible when using them on 2 or 4 way games, when they are set for 8 way. I find myself leaving them mostly in 4 way, where they work great for me in games like Ms Pac Man, etc. I only manually move them to 8 way when needed. I originally started with them in 8 way and had to change that.

The front end is AttractMode. I started out using Hyperspin, but I found the frustration in using it not work the effort, at least for me. I also ended up liking the simple AttractMode look and feel. I'm currently running Mame, NeoGeo, Daphne, Genesis, and SNES. I still need to add visual pinball and hook up the pinball buttons on my control panel.

The only remaining work I want to do is some controls for the upper panel (Flightstick, Spinner and dedicated 4-way joystick) and possibly a light gun down the road.

My cabinet started reminding me of a Tron light cycle with all the red and black, so when my daughter and I started to think about a custom marquee, we decided to stay with the Tron theme.

The marquee red color looks washed out in the photo, but looks great lit up. It uses a Tron font and red cycle graphic found on the internet. I had it printed at Game On Graphix and am very happy with the quality. I bought the acrylic and had it cut at Hobby Lobby, much cheaper than having Game On do it and ship that. The marquee retainers are clear plastic wall edge guards from Home Depot painted flat black.

That's about it. I really enjoyed this first project, especially working together with my daughter on it.

I've been excited about some of the creative Bartop systems I've seen on here and plan on doing something like that for my next project.

Wanted to thank everyone here for all the informative posts, they've been extremely helpful.
