best resolution to display mame on a crt tv?

What is the recommended setting for pc-tube television?  800x600?

Taking the time to read through this will explain why there isn't a simple answer to your question (other than 800 x 600 is the wrong choice for a standard television).

If you get through that guide and you're still keen to run MAME on a CRT TV, head over to the GroovyMAME forum for the rest of what you'll need.

If using component native is 720x480 so i just stick with that & things look just fine to me.
With Svideo I think you should stick to whatever the video card wants to output which I believe is 640x480
