Windows 7 & Groovymame 0.164 issues

Hi All,

I've just installed Windows 7 Pro x64 and Groovymame64 0.164 on a notebook with an ATI 4330 video card.  I've followed the install guide here http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewtopic.php?id=290 and have Arcade_OSD running correctly with Super Resolutions and being able to display all the custom resolutions that I choose.  The problem is, when I run the Groovymame.exe, I receive the error message "SwitchRes: could not find a video mode that meets your specs".  Clicking "OK" takes me into the Mame menu, where I can see my roms.  Selecting a rom displays the same SwitchRes error mesage, clicking OK will then launch the rom, but stretches the display of the rom to the desktop resolution.

I've disabled UAC and given the Groovymame executable admin rights, but it still throws up a SwitchRes error messages and won't allow roms to work in their native resolution.

I've taken the logs of the Double Dragon rom (see below), but can't see anything obvious.  Can anyone see or know what might be wrong?

Your trying to use super resolutions but haven't created them beforehand. Read the instructions in resllist-super.txt  and use vmmaker with admin rights.

Important note: posts reporting GM issues without a log will be IGNORED.
Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.

Many thanks for your reply, Calamity.

I'm fairly certain that I followed the instructions in resllist-super.txt the first time, but have run them again.

I had deleted the original "ReslList.txt" file and then renamed "resllist-super.txt" to "ReslList.txt".
You can see that my VMMaker.ini file (shown in my first post above) has the correct settings of :

In case it helps with troubleshooting, here's the contents of my ModeInfo.txt, Modeline.txt, ModeList.txt and RegMdlns.txt files.  These are the only files that I can see that updated when I re-ran VMMaker.exe again.

Really sorry, Calamity.  I thought that  I had included the log in my first post for Double Dragon (mame64.exe roms\ddragon.zip -v > ddragon.txt .  I've attached to this post just in case.  If there's some other way that I should be generating logs, please let me know.  Thanks.

The super resolutions are not showing. It looks like this might be an issue of running from a laptop where the resolutions not supported by the main screen are filtered out. Try replacing the 2560x modes in resllist.txt by 1280x. If it works, try using 1600x instead. Modify the -resolution option in mame.ini accordingly.

Thanks Calamity.  I will try that now and report back.  Is it odd that Arcade_OSD seems to work fine on the laptop screen though?  I can choose a number of different 15KHz resolutions and they all appear to display properly.

Ok. 

Modified all 2560 entries in resllist.txt to 1280. 
Re-ran VMMaker.exe.
Rebooted. 
Modified mame.ini to resolution  1280x0.

Now when I start Groovymame, I receive the error message "Unable to create ddraw object" and clicking "Ok" kills Groovymame and takes me back to the desktop.

Running mame64.exe roms\ddrgaon.zip -v > ddragon.txt actually starts the Double Dragon rom, but the resolution is very squashed (think short and full width of the screen), it's playing at 104% and the sound is off / running faster / higher than normal.

I should add that I've just checked Arcade_OSD and all of the 15KHz resolutions have gone and the lowest resolution I can select now is 640 x 480.

Edit - Actually, if I scroll down the selection, there are some 1280 x 240 resolutions that I can select, but when I select those, they're obviously displaying in 1280 by 240 e.g. short and full width of the screen.

Just an FYI, I've just done a fresh install of win 7 pro and GM .164 as well, and everything is working fine.
But this is with a proper pc and a HD4350..

Hi xga,

Your log shows a single display device available, that's possible the problem. You must see TWO display devices if you're using a laptop. First one is the internal lcd, second one the vga output. You must configure a extended desktop from the display properties dialog to achieve this. Don't use the typical hotkeys or whatever to clone the display through vga because it won't work that way. Then use the -screen \\.\DISPLAY1 or -screen \\.\DISPLAY2 from MAME to point to the right output.
Important note: posts reporting GM issues without a log will be IGNORED.
Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.

Thanks Calamity.  I wasn't aware of the -screen switch command and had just been using the "fn" + "F4" key to cycle to the VGA connection.

Just as a test (and before your last post), I installed XP (32bit) so I could dual boot between Windows 7 and XP and try and rule out there being an issue with the notebook.  I set up GroovyMAME and CRT_Emudriver in the normal way and got Switchres working without errors, switching to native resolutions and outputting to my 15KHz arcade monitor.  One thing I did notice, Double Dragon was running at 104% (sound was pitched up / running faster) and Shinobi was running at 99%.  Other roms like Final Fight and Street Fighter II were running exactly on 100%.  I've got Multithreading enabled, but not sure what could be causing the speed difference with some roms.  I did take a log of Double Dragon running at 104% but I'm not near the computer to post at the moment.  I wonder if installing XP 64bit would make any difference?

Anyway, I think I have ruled out there being an issue with the  notebook, so I am going to try a fresh install of Windows 7 again and see if I can get it working.
