RetroBlast retrofit for Fanconi Anemia
« on: August 24, 2015, 07:30:38 pm »
This cab is for the http://fanconi.org/ fundraiser.  Kev Steele graciously donated this cab and I'm going to fix it up for their annual fundraiser.I am on a truncated time table as the raffle is September 19th. so I have a little over 3 weeks.

FedEx did some DAMAGE to this cab . The box and cabinet were obviously dropped multiple times:

and there was some structural damage as well:

Not only did they break off the speaker connector:

they broke the sub-woofer feet too:

So onto the repair. Im trying to re-affix the chipped pieces that aren't super structural with wood glue:

For this particular part:

I backed the screws off, glued, rescrewed, and put a weight on top:

Then I started on the PC, and the curse continues!

SATA connector is broken off, just removing the unneeded DVD drive and hooking the HD up to the only other SATA connector

so I think the computer has cyber AIDS (so many flags on a few different scanners) and is severely under powered. Luckily I have a spare box from TK to plop into it. Unsure what front end to use.

This is apparently the computer that comes with the $2,000 Katana system from Dream Authentics.

3.2 is a lot more than 1.21.

We are talking about jiggawatts, right?

old piece of ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- PC is out, PC from TK is in.  Upgraded the HD from 250 GB to 500 GB too

So remember that big stupid useless opening in the back between the fan vents or speaker holes?
I got some measurements together and talking to Haruman and we came up with this:

Power cord connector and the power button for the PC. In the original design, you had to lift the CP to hit the switch on the front of the PC, well NO MORE!  I love the look of this panel!

I am in the middle of setting up the software. Luckily I started a new steam account and bought a TON of arcade style games and I am going to transfer the midway collection over to this since accounting to dream authentics, its a valid licensed copy.

Good work, and a good cause.
I can see how fedex damaged the outside of the cab, but how in the world did they damage the sata plug? Was there something loose and flying around inside?

so this cab is totally complete, I just need to update pictures and this thread.  I'll let you guys know how much money it raised after the auction.

so after all that was done, I lugged it upstairs so I could work on it in the kitchen and listen to the Eagles lose on the living room TV.

Next I cleaned up the front wiring, and put new studs in the top of the control panel:

Then I tore apart some desktop speakers, put QCs on the wires and plugged them into the existing speakers
I kept the tiny amp and everything in there, and these speakers sound pretty great despite their positioning.

Under the left speaker is the volume control knob, and under that is the LCD adjustment board.
All the wiring is bundled and tucked to the left of the PC, all power is routed to the right.
PC has brackets holding it in place (This is a TK Warrior "modder" PC)

Is the auction online or in person only?  I'll toss a couple hundred at it to get the bidding going.

Then I wired up the plug on the back, it has a standard PC plug on the outside, and its wired to a 6 way power strip on the inside (that only uses 3 plugs PC, speakers, LCD)

This is how Dream Authentics ships out their cabs, I dont understand the big hole in the back:

This is how Malenko (with the help of Haruman) fixes that mistake:

random picture of jungle king running on the cab:

For the front end its running MaLa, with a slightly modified John's Arcade skin:

The PC case itself was pretty busted up, I think the subwoofer may have smacked the PC pretty good, breaking both. I ended up not using the PC it shipped with or the speakers, so its all good :)

In person only, at a fundraiser this Saturday.  I am going to do my best to get pictures of it up on the auction block.

Well, if you want to proxy bid on my behalf, I'll happily pay the shipping charges.  I'm sure it'll got for a lot more, though.
