ATI card selection questions
« on: August 15, 2015, 08:37:17 pm »
Hi,

What is the impact of using one of the ATI cards marked in red in the CRT Emudriver documentationn at http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewtopic.php?id=47? It's a wide range of cards X700 up to X3870. These cards are easy to obtain and cheap. What modes are affected? Is it a big issue?

Also, are cards in 5x series supported or any newer cards?

Cheers,
Matt

From the thread:

The ones marked in red just cannot work under certain dotclock values and therefore the minimum displayed resolution is limited by it. There's a workaround for that which is explained in the Video Mode Maker section, but we particularly recommend the following video cards in case you can choose, since they have been confirmed not to have any low dotclock restrictions

So if you don't want to run into issues, just grab one of the cards not in red. I have run with a 4870 and now run on a 4350. I think I paid 15 bucks delivered from ebay for the 4350 after the 4870 started having artifacts.

5000 series (and newer) are not supported and likely will not be due to the driver changes as Calamity has mentioned before. Just grab a cheap 4000 series and run man. You will be glad once its all running.

Basically anything below 384x or 400x won't work. It won't be an issue at all if you're running GM exclusively. If you're going to run other emulators, specially older ones then it can be a problem.
Important note: posts reporting GM issues without a log will be IGNORED.
Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.

Thanks guys. A quick visit to Ebay and I have enough cards to last few life times.
