What's wrong with this picture??
« on: January 05, 2004, 12:29:11 pm »
OK, here's the skinny:  I have a geforce card, and am using advancemame, on windowsxp - I have taken an old monitor cable and have connected it to the 15khz arcade monitor - RGB, Ground, and Sync - and the other to my video card.  I ran advcfg and setup for a 15khz arcade monitor, and then ran mortal kombat and here is what shows on the screen - the picture aren't too clear but as you can see there is an issue - what do you think?

looks like you need to tweak the resolution that your game runs at inside advmame.  Are your other games stable ?(choose a game with a different resolution than the one shown here--like pcman or something).  if not, maybe your sync connection needs to be adjusted--On your monitor cable you should have a horizonatal sync and a vertical sync, some monitors only accept horizontal to sync, other can have horiz and vert. combined into sync.  need more info I guess...
its better to not post and be thought a fool, then to whip out your keyboard and remove all doubt...

I think the problem is the old video cable I am using - it doesn't have h and v sync , just sync.  I was told that I need to take the h and v sync and either build a WOR Gate or twist them together.  I am going to get another cable and see if that will fix it.

You might also want to check your insulation on the wiring. A lot of monitor cables mine included have return wires on R,G & B wires. They are wrapped separately from the core of each wire. If you don't have them insulated from the core of each your picture will be fuzzy and bad.

I suppose the easy way to test this is if this problem is happening for every game you run or just MK.

Doesn't MK run on medium res monitors tradtionally?

Advmame works a treat on my 15kz monitor but are you using Advmenu? I cannot get that to diplay on my arcade monitor despite selecting Arcade 15hz monitor in the config?

It would be helpful to know the make and model of the arcade monitor you are trying to connect to. Also, can you post a picture of the particular video cable you are using to hook up to the monitor?
