  • I want to build my own arcade controls!
4-player retropie based arcade table
« on: August 04, 2015, 03:58:20 pm »
First of all I'm really new to this forum thing so please inform me if I'm breaking any rules, or in other ways not following the rules of conduct.

I just finished my first arcade project, a wedding gift for my friend and his wife.

Initial design thoughts:
Because they have two kids i wanted to create something that the whole family could enjoy together. Furthermore i wanted a simple retro design, in the hopes that it would actually be something they would want inside their house. (I am not sure I succeeded on this, though)
One of my absolute favorite games is Dynablaster/Bomber Man, so by searching on "Dynablaster 4 player arcade cabinet" i found this awesome project by purpletheory: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=98761.0

What I liked about this was the simplicity of the design, and the fact that it seemed like something I could actually make with my limited skills in woodworking. Also the control setup used in this design allows for both vertical and horizontal gameplay, which was ideal because i wanted the table to support both the older games and newer ones. So with purpletheory's portable 4-player table in mind I began sketching out ideas far a similar table, but incased in a simpler wooden box opposed to a flight case.

The box:
For the box I used 12mm MDF, that was cut to the following measurements at a local wood shop.
Front & Back: 844x120mm x 2
Sides: 620x120mm x 2
bottom: 820x620mm
Top: 819*619mm

furthermore I had the shop cut a 5mm transparent acrylic glass plate in 819x619mm, same as the top-mdf peace.

Hardware:
Retropie 2
4 zippyy joystick
24 standard arcade buttons (6 red, 6 blue, 4 white, 4 green, 4 yellow (yellow for service, exit etc..))
8 arcade buttons with leds (4 colors, start, and coin)
1 19 inch samsung monitor from 2006 that I found at a local fleemarket (I was really lucky with this one because the viewing angle was really good)
2 4" 5w speakers
1 stereo amplifier
1 I-Pac-4 encoder
1 220v switch

Wires:
4 10X1m wire sets for buttons and joysticks
2 wire sets for grounding

Power:
1 12 volts adapter for led lights and audio amplifier
1 Usb adapter for powering the Raspberry Pi (Originally for Chromecast)

More stuff to come, maybe I'll even figure out how to insert images.

Is the point of the sticks and the four button clusters to play vertical games?

Yes, both vertical and to enable 4 player mode in games like dynablaster/bomberman

Hey nexu7, welcome to the forum.
Just so you know, this forum is about the process of the building arcade machines, not just a showcasing forum. With that being said, please post some details (and pictures if you can) of your build process and methods.

We're all here for sharing ideas. thx

+1

I'm also curious how the OP managed to upload any pictures when (at the time) his post count was zero?
If you can read this, it means Photobucket's money grab ruined my signature photos.
