Wells Gardner 9200 monitor and Dreamcast
« on: January 04, 2004, 11:42:12 am »
Hey guys I just plugged my dreamcast into a normal monitor using the vga connector. Now the only problem is the graphics for games like marvel vs capcom 2 are really jaggedy. This is because of monitor resolution i believe. Now if i use a wells gardner 9200 will the graphics look smooth like on a tv? or will they still be jaggedy? Thanks

I haven't done this personally, but I believe it depends how you connnect the DC to the screen.

The VGA-box I think uses some pins on the DC's video out socket to make the console output at 640x480.  Normally, the DC's default output is at low-res.  So, if you connect the RGB straight from the DC, it should appear in low-res, if you connect the relevant pins, I'm sure you could get it to output at high-res - you decide which you like best :)

This page has all the pinouts: http://www.gamesx.com/avpinouts/dricas.htm :)

Well, what I mean is that you know how when you play some games like Mortal Kombat 3 on a normal pc monitor, it looks to sharp because of the hi resolution display of the monitor. Because of this you can see ever little pixel and it looks ugly cause the sprites werent designed for such hi res. Now I would like to know if I will have this problem with a WG 9200 monitor? I know when I play marvel vs capcom 2 and other 2d fighting games on a normal pc monitor hooked up to my dreamcast it looks ugly because you can see every little pixel and is to sharp. So any thoughts? thanks

Well refer to what I said before...if you hook it up at 640x480, it will look more or less the same as on your PC monitor.  If you hook it up at low-res, then it will look more or less the same as on your TV.  So depending how you choose to connect it up, the display will look 'too sharp', OR as it does on your TV.

At least that's how I understand it...

FWIW I understand how it looks, I personally am not keen on the VGA output either.

I just had a thought - I think the D9200 comes with a VGA lead with it.  If you are thinking about plugging this straight into your DC VGA box then the display will look as it does on your PC monitor.

To get it to appear as it does on your TV, you would either have to hack a DC scart lead or make a new lead from scratch, if that makes any difference...
