Compatible "monitor specs" games!
« on: January 03, 2004, 10:40:03 pm »
Hi, i think this tread should be a sticky one!

Well, i already searched a lot for information about the monitor and graphics card most "suitables" to play arcade games at the original or best resolutions, i ended without accurate answers.

Well, i and most people here who are thinking about buying a monitor and graphics card, really want to know wich games are compatible and wich don't with them.

It's already been done a FAQ with lots of technical questions, shouldn't one be made only for monitor/game questions?

To finish, if you have made a list with compatible games and their respective hardware, please post here! I think lots of members from the community will be very pleased and thankful!

...

 :)

Not entirely what you want, but you could use my 'ArcadeVGA MAME Resolution Tool' (from my download page, click www on left).

This lists ALL the native resolutions used by the games in MAME.  Standard res games will have up to 288 lines (a little more in some cases) in one dimension, so anything above that cannot be displayed 100% accurately on a standard res monitor.  I believe VGA (high-res) begins at 640x480, so anything that or above will not display 100% accurately on a standard, or medium res monitor.

The ArcadeVGA has numerous modes to cover all standard res games.  I have no experience with medium res monitors, but I believe the ideal solution is the WG 9200 + ArcadeVGA, as this monitor can handle medium/high res modes too.  I think Hantarex make a similar model, called the Polo Star or similar...

Well, i already discovered with a "small research" around here, tons of ways to display this games but i never found a pictures and examples page! It should exist one just for it, afterall everyone wants to know what's doing specially when it comes to the monitor part (i don't wanna die  ;D) and stuff like that appears often around the boards!

Oscar already made a page with monitor image comparison, why not a "CYOM" -> Connect Your Own Monitor" :)

Everyone could contribute with pictures and examples instead of making again the same old questions...

But nice to know that your tool works fine and is availble for download!

I'm thinking about buying a vertical screen jamma cab and a horizontal screen cab, what do you think?! I'm too lazy to rotate monitors... ;P

I can barely understand what you are trying to say, but let me make it really simple here.

Mame supports games that use 3 types of monitors.

Standard resolution monitors.
Medium resolution monitors.
Vector monitors.

Each one of which only displays PROPERLY on the same monitor type. Sure there may be several slightly different resolutions standard res games use, but they all display on any standard res monitor.

While medium resolution games only display properly on a medium resolution monitor and vector games only display correctly on a vector monitor (and if you want to use Mame with a vector monitor then you need one of those special Zektor cards).

No matter what you choose it is going to be a compromise. Because there is no autorotating standard/medium/vector monitor on the market.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Hey, you sound very familiar...Whiskeroids...right (just a guess)?

You know that avatar isn't very...um...fiendish!  ;D

As far as the topic goes--I think it's pretty well covered. If you have a specific question about hooking up a specific monitor, ask and someone will help you out. As far as the graphic card thing goes, that's been covered MANY times. I don't really know what we're missing or what you're asking for??? Sounding a lot like Whiskeroids...  ;D
