IPS LCD G-Sync Selection Help
« on: July 27, 2015, 12:23:11 am »
I am trying to finalize plans for a slim cabinet build and am in need of some advice regarding displays.

I will be using a PC with MAME (plus some TBD frontend). I've read through dozens of threads regarding CRT vs LCD, and then many more regarding different LCDs, lag, SLG, etc.

I've kind of narrowed down my preference to an LED/LCD with IPS and G-Sync based on threads from the past year. Is there something newer I've missed maybe?

Monitors I'm looking at are:

Acer XB270HU bprz 27-inch WQHD NVIDIA G-SYNC (16:9) $760 @ Amazon
ASUS PG278Q ROG Swift 27-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor (16:9) $720 @ Amazon

Will likely run one of these with the CraftyMech SLG. Will be using this to play vector games, lots of other raster classics from the 80s, and would also like to be able to play some of the newer CHD titles.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice you folks can provide.

Why would you use a CM SLG if you're running one of these super high-res monitors? The CM SLG only works with 640x480 and 1024x768 resolutions.

As yots says, an SLG with either of those monitors wouldn't make sense. Instead  run one of the shaders in mame, HLSL or  GLSL. I'd recommend mameUIFX as it has the shaders already in the download with good presets and they are easy to apply within the UI.

Before you blow that kind of money on a monitor I'd try them on your current monitor to get a feel for the results. Though they have their merits you really don't need that high end of a monitor for really good results. You will need a decent video card to run the shaders though.

I've recently been setting up an LCD build of mine and testing the shaders, screen tearing, audio stutter etc. More info in this thread which may be helpful info for you.

Thanks for the input guys. It seems like I may need to build out a new computer for this cabinet first so I can play with some software and see if I like the results.

Wouldn't mind a bit if I can save a bit on the display. Could put that $ towards my next build idea.

Will check out the thread you linked.

Thanks again!

Besides that thread just do a Google search on mame and HLSL or mame and GLSL and the Lottes shader. I'd download mameuifx and try it on your existing hardware and activate HLSL first and then GLSL to give yourself a visual reference for how each look.

Good luck on your research.
