Stuffed up my resolution settings somehow, please help :(
« on: July 18, 2015, 09:23:39 am »
Been running Groovymame 0.151 on my Vertical Astro City for a couple of years now and decided it was time to update to 0.163 which I had already successfully done on my Horzontal cab the other week.

Updated and when running MaLa and starting the new GM some games would play but I was sometimes having mame crash with an error message back to the MaLa GUI.

I had followed this installation guide here http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewtopic.php?id=290 but I must admit I was probably too tired to be taking this on and may have made an error somewhere :(

So when I could not resolve the crashes I decided to put it back the way it was and moved everything back to my old 0.151 set up, that worked but I noticed that my picture no longer filled the screen properly and had a black bar at the top and side. AHHHHHHHGGGGGG WTF? :( So I went hunting for solutions and couldn't see anything and decided to do a system restore thinking that would fix it back to how it was, but no luck.

I'm guessing that something has mucked up with my Arcade_OSD so I ran that and had a look but I'm a bit lost and can't see anything obvious.

I must go to bed now, dunno if I will sleep with my cab not being right, but tomorrow I can look for other config files or setting to check and upload here if anyone thinks more info would help?

Here is a pic showing the blank area at top and side, it was really noticeable playing games such as Flying Shark that it was cut off at the top, well the whole game showed but it didn't stretch the full screen.

I may have accidentally edited a setting in my 0.151 mame config when I was transferring settings over to the new config, but this doesn't seem to be a config issue, more a windows display issue as the desktop is not filling the screen.

I'm getting lost and frustrated with this, Flying Shark leaves a blank area at the top, MrDo doesn't fill the width of the screen etc etc.

I generated a new mame.ini and went right through the settings, no fix, I tried generating new VMmaker modes and checked the aspect ratio in the .ini was 3:4 as Calamity had suggested in another thread.

I have tried all the mame.ini resolutions settings I can but what I think might be happening is all the games are playing in their true resolution and not stretching to fill the screen like they did before, I would prefer them to fill the screen, but I can't get it back to that. WTF I have been playing with mame for over 10 years and sometimes things like this happen and I still feel like a noob :(

Here are some files that I hope might help someone to help me.

MrDo autogenerated .cfg from the cfg folder
And my mame.ini

I'm trying to run MrDo and generate a txt log but stuffed if I can, where does it save the log in the mame directory I assume? anyway I can run MrDo through the run command fine but when I add the code to generate the log nothing happens. Here is a cut and paste of my Run command "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\GroovyMAME 0.151 Windows 64bit\mame.exe" mrdo-v>mrdo.txt

I'm running XP-64 if that helps, and groovymame 0.151

I know there are so many variables that it is difficult to help me, but I'm trying to learn and give people the info they need to help me, I have notes and forum print out all over the floor, I don't give up easily.
Perhaps if someone can see why I'm not generating a log file that might help? I tried it like above and I also tried with spaces between the commands, still no log.

Probably groovymame log would be better but I don't remember if version 151 has such option. It's better to grab GM 163.

BTW. Is arcade_15 the best option for your monitor? Maybe it's better to use some specific configuration.
I'm changind only 2 options:

monitor                   arcade_15
orientation               rotate_r  ; but vertical should work for you

and that the only options I need to change to get vertical games run with vertical orientation.

That's the expected behaviour my friend. It looks like your setup has been wrong all the time until now that you read Recap's guide. Having all games stretched to fill the screen is a super lame configuration and for that you'd better be using vanilla MAME. Anyway if that's what you really want just set a fixed resolution in mame.ini, e.g. -resolution 640x480. Then use your monitor potentiometers to get that one resolution fit the screen and you're done.

Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.

Super resolutions will partially solve Your problems.

That's the expected behaviour my friend.

Thanks, yeah I know that, my panic was caused by the change in behaviour of the resolutions and my games not reaching the top of the screen anymore, I didn't really want them stretched. Yeah I do use magic resolutions and groovymame as they should be to give me true res as is the whole point of groovymame, but in the heat of my issue I explained myself incorrectly, not really sure why I said that as it's not really what I was after.

I tried again to get 0.163 running and followed the installation guide here http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewtopic.php?id=290 to the letter and reset my modelines as per this guide for super resolutions https://code.google.com/p/groovyarcade/wiki/Explanations_modelines but when I start a game in MaLa it crashes mame. I can run the 0.163 mame through a command line, but running it in MaLa crashes.

Anyway I have it back to the way it was with 0.151 before and I'm happy with the look of the true resolutions, I still don't know why they moved down the screen before.

Yes I'm using m939 (from memory) as my monitor in my mame.ini and I tried rotate_r but found I didn't need to as vert was ok.

I now know why I couldn't get a log file to generate if it's not supported in 0.151 I wasted a fair bit of time trying to do that.

Anyway I'm up and playing again so I will sleep well tonight, thanks for listening to my ramble and trying to help.

Of course 0.151 can generate logs as any other version. Next time try opening cmd and cd into the folder and type the command from there, instead of from the run box.

I hope you had luck fixing the issue with Mala.
