Games with "stage select" screens?
« on: January 02, 2004, 04:23:44 pm »
Im working on a front end in flash that'll launch each of the emulators and programs Ill be running.

My original plan was just to have the systems listed, use the joystick and a button to select.
This turned into a faked high score list with each of the systems having an entry. I like this idea and may run with it still

The thought I had today was similar to a stage select screen at the beginning of some games. Circus CHarlie was the first one I thought of. The megaman games on NES had em, Tempest does. Im sure a lot of the console multi cartridges have em.

Are there any that you can think of that would be particularly cool looking for this? I'll be replacing graphics and text but want it to look as much like a real game as possible.

Heres the Circus Charlie one if you arent sure what Im thinking

Basically what I would do is take the box for Easy, and make that MAME, 2 and 3(normal) would be for atari and genesis, etc

Are there any other themes besides the high score list or stage select that would be cool in an arcade atmosphere?

Perhaps some of the driving games that let you select a certain track by turning the steering wheel?

Outrun has the music select screen.
Star Wars lets you choose a difficulty level.
Gauntlet lets you choose which character you want to be, as do several others.

Hmmm...  That's all I can come up with off the top of my head.

Humm, i think that Flash could be a problem for the project that you're making!

The programing part in Flash has flaws and i'm not sure if you can get the  good looking that other front-ends around...

I'm sorry if my comment is absurd but i already had a few headaches working with that program!  :o

Good luck with that, keep us up-to-date!  :D

No real problems.. All it does is launch a bat file depending on which option is active. Originally  Iwas using all of the emulators in advancemenu, but with 5 emu's at ~1000+ games apiece it was taking for ever to load at the beginning. I simply made 5 different advmenu.cfg files, one ofr each system. THe batch files launch the respective .bat and it starts right up. To switch systems you jsut hit [esc] and your back to the flash menu

I'll definitely post it up when Im done and probably take requests if someone wants a customised one, with their favorite emu's on it

If youve got a front end already that will switch, then thered be no need for this. The ones that do I havent been happy with

Final Fight doesnt really have a stage select, but it has a big map that has different areas of the city, that would be pretty easy to imitate/incorporate.

Super Space Invaders / Majestic 12 has a stage select.

It is more like selecting a path to completion, because each level only leads to a few others.  Each time you play you could choose a different sequnce of levels.
Real Life.  Still a poor substitute for video games!
