Sony KV29F1U problems with CRT_EMUDRIVER
« on: July 09, 2015, 01:56:03 pm »
Hello guys,

well I thought I would never be in this position with things going so well with the arcade build it was too good to be true, well yes it was too good to be true I have problems.

I have a Sony KV29F1U in amazing condition hooked up to the pc using the UMSA (Ultimate scart adapter) with a ATI 4890 1gb running windows 7 x64 with Calamity's amazing software CRT_EMUDRIVER. I have another LCD monitor connected running at 1440x900.

VMMaker seemed to be going well until I checked all of the resolutions manually to test the timings. All of them appeared ok apart from a few, its strange but the screen is scrolling repeatedly and im unable to stop it even if I edit the modelines. :banghead: Now im not currently at the arcade machine but I will post which ones I am having problems with including the logs of the vmmaker.

Im hoping that with your help guys I can crack this one because to have the knowledge to truly understand the way a crt works with the modelines is to be honest beyond my understanding (I am as a you say a lay person but willing to try)

As soon as I am in the garage I will post my results, I just hope someone can help!!

Ok ive been testing the resolutions and seem to notice the issues with the vfreq are on 256 and 264 lines. Im hoping this makes sense, because any of the other resolutions without these in seem fine.... help

I have attached my vmmaker.ini and mame.ini

perhaps try, in your vmmaker.txt file:

MonitorType = "CUSTOM"

and

monitor_specs0   15725-16100, 50-62, 2.000, 4.700, 8.000, 0.064, 0.192, 1.024, 0, 0, 288, 448

Does the screen roll vertically or horizontally?
Important note: posts reporting GM issues without a log will be IGNORED.
Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.

just curious have u done tests to see what the highest frequency setting (15725-16100) your tv can cope with. the reason I ask is, although sony's are renowned for coping with high scan rates, I had a sony trinitron in the past which was one of the later ones, with a more 'flatter/not so rounded corners' screen, and I found it couldn't cope with scan rates much higher than 16000, so I got rid of it (mind you I don't know if there was something wrong with that tv, or some of my other settings were causing problems, but still -thought I would mention this)

It rolls vertically, but only seems to do this on 256 and 264 resolutions, even when I have adjusted the ranges below 16100. All the others seem fine apart from those... When I was playing around with vmmaker I adjusted the v lines total below 273 and it was fine. Althoughi am very aware its creating a new resolution I.e (400 x 256 becomes 416 x 256)

I'm really stumped......

Yes adder, this is one of the later models with the square corners. It seems to handle most things but does struggle with settings above 16100.... Its picture is amazing though and would be a shame to say goodbye to it....

Adder and calamity is it worth me posting the res/mode list document? Is there any way I can get vmmaker to avoid resolutions being made that are the 256 and 264? Although I know this is might seem lazy it would prob solve my woes.

Its just really frustrating, if I cant fix this I will probably go back to my Mitsubishi crt....

it is a shame that you are running vertical games 'rotated' so that you are playing all games with your tv in the regular horizontal position, rather than physically rotating your tv between playing horizontal and vertical games
In the past I also used to run all games with my tv set in the regular horizontal position, but eventually gave up as it was hard to get good results (especially when you have vertical games which are 288 lines tall, such as pacman)

If it rolls vertically the problem is with vertical refresh, not horizontal.  Looks like your tv only supports ntsc signals. There's a chance that a vertical freq. potentiometer on the chassis or the service menu might fix it.

Thanks adder and calamity, ok I will investigate the service menu to see if I can manually adjust this. I have previously got the geometry as best as possible. Do you guys know if there is a specific setting to change on the service manual that might actually help?

I determined not to give up, and sadly adder I'm just going to have to let go of the idea of ever rotating the tv considering this is supposed to go in the cab.... I might try the ntsc setting and see if that helps at all too
