Question about real boards...
« on: June 20, 2015, 09:47:34 pm »
I was just looking around the web and after reading about Yots' exploits in the Chuff thread, I've got a question.  Let's say, just for example, that I get hold of a CPS-1 board.  Does that mean that simply burning a new set of ROM chips (with data available in any MAME romset) and plugging them into the CPS-1 board, I could have pretty much any game on this page?

It gets tricky when you start dealing with security chips. The Midway Wolf Unit boards I've been futzing with all have security chips that would prevent such swapping, but MK3FAN has a buddy who tweaked the security code and allows you to use any roms on the board, regardless of the security chip.

From what I'm reading the CPS-1 boards didn't encrypt or have those stupid suicide batteries...  Looking at the list of games that ran on this board, I'm thinking of picking one up and a fistful of empty ROMS and killing a few weekends.  Would be awesome to have a real board to go with that CP I got from ya!

According to this thread at KLOV, you need a special GAL security chip burned, but entry-level burners like the GQ-4X can't do them.

I just burned a Galaga Rapid Fire chip. Fun stuff.

Until you combine that with the "enemies no fire" glitch and you're on level 75 on Wednesday in a bar at 2pm and the waitress has gone from annoyance to anger when you keep telling her no more beers and that cabinet is set to max volume.

CPS-1 are notorious for suicide batteries. Where did you find your info? Also, they have encryption etc.

Ok, apparently the suicide battery popped up about half way through the life of the CS-1...
