Tank Stick / Ubuntu/ Attract Mode / MAME

So I'm running MAME .152 on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS w/ the Attract Mode Front End.

Been trying to get my Tank Stick working with it, particularly Street Fighter Games configuration (6 button layouts).  I've had to remap some buttons.  But the big problem I have is I can't get the ESC to work within Attract Mode running Mame.  Anyone run into this or have any insight?

Pressing ESC on my keyboard works just fine, but need to be able to use the designated ESC button on the Tank Stick.
