Before you get all "family orientated" and numbers are up on me, take a cold hard look at the creativity and sharing amongst todays users as compared to days of old.... Whats changed in the last few years?

Oh, I think the answer to that is rather obvious.  The audience interested in this hobby primarily consists of people born in a very defined range, that I'd peg as 1970-1990 with a smattering of exceptions on either end of that.  There's nobody new beating down the gates and everyone here has already done everything.  JAMMA beater into a MAME cab?  Found your holy grail?  Restored a dedicated machine?  Flirted with pinball?  Bartops? Pedestals?  We've all done it already.  Now you can just throw money at someone to CNC them for you, so you don't even need a saw anymore.

Have been kind of surprised that the driving and dance machines never really got big around here, but console and PC gaming were so far along that the home versions can easily be superior for anyone interested.  Maybe with Golden Tee finally emulated we'll see some more action there, and I think it's a matter of time before all of us mess around with an active marquee.

Interesting question, Jennifer, and I don't disagree with your alter ego. I think a lot of builders either find a new hobby they want to get involved in and move on, or more likely, they go from MAME cabs to dedicated cabs and have this (in my opinion) misguided sense that MAME cabs are for filthy infidels and so they stop coming here. Also, based on the past year or so, I think some guys getting in today don't love classic games as much as they simply want the ability to play old games and don't really care about authenticity.  Not saying they're wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's why we're seeing a lot of 4P Widescreen cabs today.

[Even though BadMouth thinks Im a piece of ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---,

I called you a ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- stirrer, not a piece of ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---
---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- stirrer = button pusher

Was just calling you on the BS claiming you are an innocent angel  who "suddenly" became thought of as a problem user.

I wish I could just bring some of these dudes over and let them play vertical games on actual hardware if full CRT glory, there is no freaking comparison to a vertical game on a horizontally mounted LCD (I don't care  how big it is)

And I mean with multi-player, your talking to a dude that on family vacations to Six Flags back in the day, instead of riding rides I would wait for hours for my turn on X-men 6 player.  Heck I'd even be Dazzler just to get quarters into that machine.  I remember those days fonder than most, but I still would never let that govern build design.

Nahhhhh NEVER claimed innocence but never considered myself a problem user either. I dont like getting lumped in with PBJ! The best most recent thread you posted as an example of me....stirring, was where X2 was the stirrer and I was cordial and non engaging from 5 months ago. The closest thing to an attack on X2 was TacticalChaos' hard drivin FAQ.

Ive been on my bestest behavior pretty much all year. The one thread where I was purposely being an ---uvula--- was this one : http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,145734.0.html
and in that thread I was actually quite helpful to everyone except fr_303 and a moderator posted in the thread without any hubbub about it.

Any fart, enough about me, this thread needs other peoples naff not mine. Ive accepted that Scott is going to be a moderator, and Ive accepted that he'll most likely continue to not care about improving, but I tried to do something about it and it didn't come to pass. I'm over it.

That is their problem.  I find myself not wanting to build another cab as the days go on.  I stay because I have found a good group of people that not only talk about arcade machines but also take the time to listen and ---That which is odiferous and causeth plants to grow--- within the forum about a wide variety of issues.  If anyone feels they are being censored unjustly then I suggest they find another place to be.  The internet is a large place.  It's like getting mad when someone asks you not to swear in their house.  You may find it commonplace to swear  within your own house but some people may not share the same idea.

This isn't about swearing, although  that is some peoples palette of expression.... I was referring to a obvious hatred to certain mods. yet that cant be the problem.
Yes it could be said age range/interest in building cabs has leveled, But that is just as disturbing, That would indicate total lack of interest making and this site only worth its historical content.... As for the censorship yes it is a thing, selective, but there, I have seen it.

Censorship isn't what started the uproar over mods. Not being able to handle authority responsibly is what started it.

I stayed up late playing diablo with my wife, and she ewnt to bed. I stayed up and passed out on the couch, and woke up with the worst crick in my neck and shoulder. Today I'm hiking up a mountain and camping on top. Hopefully that pain isn't going to ruin anything but it's bad enough that pouring coffee this morning was not an easy task.

Another factor might be that the quality of the builds here is so damn high. People who are new to this, having zero experience, might be a bit intimidated by the awesome builds floating around here. I certainly was.

I find myself widening my scope as the years roll on.  I used to be all about mame and emulators... these days I could care less.  All the games I wanted to play from my youth were emulated over 10 years ago... and I've played them... over and over and over.  So now you see me working on stuff like pc games and what-not.  I've gotten into racing cabs because those were the few games I couldn't play on the old mame cab due to control limitations.  As for cabs... I don't have a lot of interest anymore.  LCDs have *almost* superseded arcade monitors at this point so making a big 200lb cab to house 5 lbs and 2 cubic feet worth of gear doesn't make as much sense now that I've gotten the nostalgia out of my system.  I've got a vertical crt cab, my main one and the upcoming driving cab.... I'm done with that side of things.

About the moderation and stuff... I can remember when that policy was implemented.  There was a time when we all used to gather in the chatroom of the evenings... there were 20 or 30 of us some nights and Saint would flat out ask us what we thought about certain stuff.  At the time, the reasoning behind not swearing was that we were all adults (for the most part) and if we kept the language polite younger builders could frequent the forums without worry.  These days I'm not sure how necessary it is as the average age seems to be 30+ but I still think the intention was good and I do my best to abide by the rules out of respect.  And that's the issue when you get down to it.  Do you respect the people who run the forum or not?  If you don't then maybe it's time to take a break and re-evaluate why you hang around here.

I tend to agree with you  ;D But none the less I didn't know that beforehand. I thought I was going to be shot down for not doing an arcade related theme and that would have been that. I probably would have built it anyway, but I don't know if I'd still be in this forum today.

Shortly after discovering this forum, I planned to throw together a cab that weekend.  I wasn't even aware emulators existed before discovering byoac via searching for megatouch info.  Then I looked at the builds for ideas and decided I was not ready.  It was 2 or 3 years of soaking up info on here before I felt I was ready.  I did use an xarcade tankstick during that time. Part of me wishes I'd just threw together a crappy cheap cab.  I'd probably played it more than worked on it.  And if I wanted to change something, I wouln't have nice artwork or paint to worry about.  I'd just keep hackng it up.

That's why people don't change their cab, but go on building second and thirds  :)  I dunno. I couldn't just throw together a cab. My reasoning is that if I'm going to put a lot of work into it, I might as well give it my best shot.

Eh but you learn from experience as well.  There is the cabinet you think you want, and the one you actually need.  My main cab is more or less the same aside from some cosmetic improvments, but it's on it's third control panel and I'm thinking of doing it one more time to minimize the layout even more.

Where as for my first cab I essentially built "noob bait" that's been recreated at least a dozen times now.

I'm strangely fine with that. ;D

Speak for yourself, Because I still skip lunch for weeks on end to buy that "new part", I still stay up days on end for some silly project, I still cut everything on antique equipment, I still work on these games every day.... So yes so maybe I have done most everything on my list, But just don't believe others can just "Be done" at some point without sacrificing the love for it they once had.

So last night a buddy of mine gave me some NBA Hangtime sideart as a belated birthday present for my NBA JamMA cab. It's NOS with a few chips and scuffs, but that just adds character. Thanks Arcadenut!

Another factor might be that the quality of the builds here is so damn high. People who are new to this, having zero experience, might be a bit intimidated by the awesome builds floating around here. I certainly was.

True enough. there's a lot of great builds here.

But people shouldn't let that stop them. Heck, my build got quite the reception when it ended up cross posted on KLOV  ;) . I'd wager it's more a demographic thing, like others have said.

For anti-chuff, ugh. Same as it has been for the last 3 years. Unbelievably greedy, narcissistic ex. Saw a few signs, didn't put one and one together till it was too late.

Tru dat.  My first build was a weecade.  It was okay but the great builds on here convinced me  I could do better.  So I built a Nintendo cab that I am very pleased with.  But there are some folks who take it to extremes... *cough* *cough* Purple wire that matches their cab... *cough* *cough*

Hey, that green and purple bell cord wire was awesome!  :)

I used to really like arcades when I was a kid, but I wasn't a fanatic about them.

What drew me into the forum was the idea of building something really nice, and when I was done, having something that would do more than just serve as a place to set my drinks.

The build itself is the fun part. I think everyone else in my house loves the games more than I do  :D

What would be the point of cross threading something on Klove?.... Seems to me it would be a and/or thing, Kinda like cheating on your boyfriend.

I didn't. Someone else posted a link there to my project here. KLOV's not really the place for a project like mine  ;D

I think for the most part KLOV gets a bad rap. I think its more of a mutual respect thing now. We send people to KLOV for dedicated cab issues and they send people here with MAME issues.

Other than 404 trolling me there , I cant really complain.

Baby, they would have you crying, mascara flowing down your cheeks in about 1 hour there at KLOV.

KLOV is where you go if you really love arcade cabinets and games. If you just want a machine that plays video games,  you stay here.
